Description
Avignon: Laurent Aubanel, 1813. FIRST EDITION. Woodcut and typographic ornaments. Untrimmed in contemporary pastepaper wrappers backed with printing waste from the same publication. A fine copy in genuine, original condition. First edition, an anonymous encyclopedic handbook of physical and moral health for laymen. Divided into two separate dictionaries, the first part contains terms related to the conservation of health and ethics, and the second addresses medicinal plants, foods, and compounds, complete with recipes and directions for use. Unlike a typical alphabetic index, though, each entry includes practical advice, historical information, and literary concordances. In keeping with the cerebral theme of the text, it has entries for surgeon, sleep, exercise, saliva, and vapors as well as love, laughing, vengeance, and usury. Guillaume de Broutet (1739-1817) was an often overlooked figure in the psychiatric reform movement in the late 18th century. He served as Administrator or the Hôspice des Insensés in Avignon and Rector of the Pénitents Noirs de la Miséricorde, a charity dedicated to prisoners and the mentally ill. In the Avertissement of this book, he indicates that it should not be sold for profit, and anyone who receives a free copy should make a charitable donation or give the book to a charitable person. OCLC locates three copies outside Europe: DeWitt, Yale, and National Library of Medicine.

Description
New York: Harper & Brothers, 1885. FIRST AMERICAN EDITION. With frontispiece in each volume, 5 colored maps (including 2 very large folding maps in the pocket to each volume) 42 full-page engraved plates and dozens of text woodcuts. The folding maps are in excellent condition, without tears. Original publisher’s decorated cloth, very minor smudging but with bright colors; interior absolutely excellent. Withdrawn from the New Jersey Historical Society, with their bookplate indicating a gift from Marcus S. Ward and their inconspicuous blindstamp on each title. A wonderful copy. First American edition, published the same time in London. Already a famous explorer, Stanley was approached by King Leopold II of the Belgians to assist in opening up the Congo region for development and “westernization,” although his main intent was to exploit the natural resources of the region for himself. Between 1879 and 1894, Stanley built a road from the lower Congo to Stanley Pool, launching steamers on the upper river. Despite entering into treaties with local chieftains, he assisted Leopold to fully exploit the entire area, often with cruel acts against the indigenous population (including his own porters). In this, his journalistic recitation of his time spent there, he details the social and economic evolution of the area in the creation of the Congo Free State. Stanley (1841-1904), though born in Wales, spent many years in the United States, actually fighting in the Civil War for both the Confederate and Union armies. Most famous for his exploration of the African Continent and his locating the missionary and explorer David Livingstone, he was revered as a romantic explorer and journalist despite also being known for his cruelty and disregard of African natives.

Description
[New York: Charles Frohman, 1911]. First Edition. Oblong folio (28x34.75cm.); original photo-illustrated string-bound card wrappers, yapp edges; unpaged; photographic illus. throughout. Some shallow chips and tiny losses to wrapper extremities, none affecting text or illustrations, spine nearly split, some foxing to contents, else About Very Good. Deluxe souvenir brochure issued in conjunction with one of Adams's last Broadway appearances. (The actress, who achieved fame in 1905 playing the lead role in J.M. Barrie's "Peter Pan," would retire in 1916.) "Chantecler", which criticised the modernist movement and promoted idealism, was considered rather unusual for being set in a barnyard, the protagonist, played by Adams, a rooster. The present item is illustrated with dozens of stills from the original Broadway production, showcasing the exquisitely realistic costumes and set design.

Description
1946. Near Fine. Colorful and fun handkerchief depicting young women, college aged, playing tennis, basketball, and golf, riding horses, running and swimming. The single exception is a vignette of two women lying comfortable in a tree's shade, both reading a book, a Greek colonnaded building, suggestive of a university building, in the background. N.d., but from the hair styles and fashion clearly from the 1940s, and probably from just after the end of the Second World War. The design of the hankie is a deft and seamless collage. Supplementing the figurative vignettes of the active women -- we would say there are seven separate such vignettes, each with one or two women engaged in the particular activity -- the tree that forms the center is dotted with small vignettes of objects integral to some of the activities -- tennis racquets, golf clubs, books. Acting to separate the larger figurative vignettes from one another are enlarged abstracted oak leaves which we believe are deliberately shaped to suggest swans. This being a hankie celebrating active vigorous women, men may be absent from the artwork but are of clearly on the minds of the nubile women, as suggested by the carved initials and heart on the tree trunk! The hankie is about 50 cm square, or not quite 20 inches square. We do not know who made this hankie, nor how many might have been made. Surely there are few, if any, survivals of it. We spot two tiny pinprick holes in the fabric. Nothing of the design is lost, and the colors remain vibrant.

Description
quarto, three pages, plus integral address leaf, some splitting along folds, repaired with archival tissue, else in good, clean and legible condition. Clarke the newly appointed Canal Commissioner writes his son disparaging the "mass" of job applicants besieging him seeking an "office, post or place" – after which he informs his son that he had secured appointments for his son Robert, and other relatives in the canal and engineering departments. "My Dear Son, … I am well and in good spirits but am – and has been very busy since I came here, and especially since I was appointed Canal commissioner I have been inveloped in a moving mass of importunate office hunters – and appointments are nearly all made and the crowd have pretty much dispersed. The very blind and the lame; the halt and the maimed were all ready patriotically to serve their country. Poor pitiable objects came imploringly seeking an office a post or a place, because they had "a wife and nine small children and one at her breast" The multitude attended with pretty much the same feeling of eager anxiety that is said to take place at the drawing of a lottery – each hoping that he would draw a prize. An inordinate lust for office – and an insatiable hungering and thirsting for money are at present crying evils in America. Ambition and Avarice and covetousness are predominant features in our republic. I hope my son, that you may never be left under the power of either the one or the other of those mean, wicked and deadly vices. I am getting along very well in my business. The present Board is not as well sorted as the old Board with Messrs Mitchell & McCoy in it. … Robert has got into business in engineering. I procured an appointment for Mr. W. Milnor Roberts as Engineer and he has taken Robert along with him as assistant I intend to assist James Moore to start a store this spring and intend putting John into it with him. I have procured situations for your uncle Wm Drips on the Rail road on the mountain; and for your uncle Wm S. McLean on the Canal, at or near Pittsburg. They both need assistance very much. We have an immense number of applications of young men wanting stations in the engineer corps. Robert Wms chance of getting employment (with his taciturn disposition) would be but slender – almost hopeless, if I was not at the source of the dispensing power. Hence my commission is worth my own pay, and his pay combined, not to speak of the employment of your two uncles. …"
