Description
Modena: Presso la Società Tipografica, 1790. Original edition. Very Good. Octavo (22 cm); 117, [1] pages, and four full page engraved plates hors texte by Antonio Rosaspina. Half-page vignettes by the same artist close each of the four cantos. Engraved roundel on title page. LACKS final blank leaf G/12. In plain paper covers attached to texblock with codex stitching revealed along spine. Remains of manuscript title on spine ("Bandettini"). Corners bumped. Old repairs on verso of final leaf. Negligible foxing. The whole preserved in custom-made clamshell box. References: Ferri, 33; Parenti, "Rarità bibliografiche" (1958) vol 4, p. 72. At age 27, wildly famous for her remarkable performances of improvised poetry and dance, Teresa Bandettini published this narrative poem about love, jealousy, and grief. This work, and others to follow, betrayed the author's ambition to exceed her career as an "improvvisatrice" and compose written poetry. Indeed, Bandettini was a driven artist. She was orphaned at age seven and she grew up in miserable circumstances. At age 15, she was sent off with a dance company, and there she discovered her talent for composing well-shaped poetry spontaneously while dancing. She craved an education, spending her down time reading and studying classical languages (Eventually she studied with some of the most revered professors of the age.) Perhaps she was stung by some of the adverse criticism aimed at her and other improvising poets, that the stuff was enchanting in the moment but thin if written down. Whatever the reason, she took it upon herself to write The Death of Adonis in four cantos of epic eight-line stanzas. We know the poem was reviewed for publication and perhaps retouched by Ludovico Savioli (1729-1804), a respected academic poet of the day and chair of the history department at the University of Bologna. Savioli is no doubt the unnamed "friend" to whom Bandettini dedicates the book in the preface. The publication was a success. It was even set to music by Ferdinando Paer, but never so performed. It is gracefully illustrated with four full-page narrative scenes and four half-page vignettes by Rosaspina, and an engraved roundel on the title page.

London: S. and J. Sprint, 1700. Hardcover. Small 8vo. Rebound in full burgundy calf with gilt spine lettering and compartments. (8pp), 359pp, (3pp), 158pp, (2pp), 64pp. Engraved title page, 3 full-page engravings. Very good. Faintly age toned, but largely free from foxing and edge chips. Tight, attractive first edition of the collected works of the noted French novelist, poet and dramatist (1610-60) in perhaps turn-of-the-century (ca. 1900) handsome binding. Notes the title page, "Translated by Mr. Tho.[mas] Brown, Mr. [John] Savage, and Others" -- the "and Others" referring to the first important English translation of Scarron, John Bulteel's 1665 translation of "The Comical Romance." John Davies of Kidwelly, Wales, even earlier translated and published eight Scarron tales, but this 1700 edition does not make clear in its "The Booksellers to the Readers" explanation precisely which of these translations were used; they do claim on title page that "A Great Part [of this edition] of which never before in English." The first part contains Scarron's large "Comical Romance," the second part five short tales and the third part a selection of his letters. Front flyleaf bears engraved 18th century armorial bookplate of the Scottish clan Halkett ("Fides Sufficit," faith is sufficient) numbering this volume and dating it "1717"; front flyleaf bears the 1928 bookplate of noted Chicago attorney Seymour J. Frank, a well-known Lincoln and Civil War scholar. Scarce -- and popular enough that a second edition was published in 1703, a third in 1712 and fourth in 1727. A superb first edition with many of the first translations into English.

Description
Colorado, 1954. Near fine. 11" x 14". Full leather post binder. 120 pages with 338 black and white photos adhesive mounted. 68 photos measure 4½" x 6½" or larger, the rest measure from 2¼" x 3½" to 3" x 5" and all are captioned. Album and contents near fine or better. This is an album of well composed images documenting a trip throughout the state of Colorado in 1954. It's organized into the following twelve sections, each with a handsomely designed separate title page in colored stencil with an outline map and the following titles: Million Dollar Highway, Box Canyon, Colorado National Monument, Glenwood Springs, Glenwood Canyon, Highway 6 to Central City, Clear Creek Canyon, Central City, Berthoud Pass, Rocky Mountain National Park, Big Thompson Canyon, Homeward Bound. This apparently was originally part of a pair of albums as the first section is numbered "11" and the compiler made a point of creating gorgeous albums of travels, as item #45, below, comes from the same family. The vast majority of photos here are landscape shots along the routes and destinations listed on the title pages but also include Mt. Abrams, the Eagle River Dam, the Continental Divide, Granby Reservoir and numerous other locales. At least 40 photos are street scenes and/or depict roadside attractions or commercial buildings. Many depict signage as well. The Central City section is fantastic with 21 photos devoted entirely to streets and building frontage. Interestingly, the compilers took photos of their hotels and motels, with a total of 27 photos depicting buildings, rooms and grounds of five different lodging locales. A lovely drive through Colorado at mid-century.

Description
Leeds: Mr. Linley's . . . Academy, Low Ash Hall, Sheffield, [ca. 1870]. 238 x 295 mm. (9 3/8 x 11 5/8"). 12 unnumbered leaves, the last blank. Original white faux moiré wrapper, upper cover with a glazed oval color vignette of a pastoral scene at the center enclosed by a large and very ornate frame of green and gilt. First page with elegant engraved cartouche (around engraved Linley information) featuring three lovely vignettes of Cambridge landmarks, original purple tissue guard. First page with ink ownership inscription of Master S. M. Hibberd, dated 1870; final leaf signed by Hibberd and dated "Christmas 1870." Wrappers lightly soiled with half a dozen tiny chips or wrinkles to edges, minor thumbing to a corner of the first leaf, but a well-preserved copy of an easily damaged item, the binding still bright and tight, and the leaves with their careful calligraphy remarkably clean and fresh. The neatly copied penmanship exercises in this book lack ornate flourishes, but were no doubt essential to Master Hibberd's success in life. He was a pupil at a boarding school near Sheffield, where young men trained for a career in business, and a neat handwriting would be a pre-requisite for employment as a clerk. The exercises here consist of writing out moral platitudes ("Beware of intemperance"; "Learning merits patronage"; "Penmanship is most desirable"), each beginning with a different letter of the alphabet. Linley's school is of some interest to Dickens readers because it was thought by some to be the model for the Yorkshire school conducted by Squeers in "Nicholas Nickleby," a place where boys were ill-treated and barely fed (the novel prompted a considerable controversy about methods of public schools as a result). Linley was even encouraged (but declined) to undertake libel litigation against Dickens. For several decades, John Linley (1809-1879) was a prominent schoolmaster in Sheffield who seems to have done particularly well with the owner of our book. His young pupil Samuel Martin Hibberd (1858-1929), in fact, became a captain of industry, being a principal at the top of three companies, according to Thomas Skinner's "Directory of Directors" for 1927. Hibberd was especially well known as Managing Director of Martyn's Stores, a constellation of pharmacies. At his death, the Pharmaceutical Journal reported that his estate was valued in excess of £30,000, a very great deal of money at the time. Someone was obviously proud of young Hibberd's accomplishments here--and probably was fond of the very handsome front cover--as this fragile item has remained in near-original condition for almost a century and a half. Such material is uncommonly seen on the market..

Description
New Haven; London: Yale University Press; Marian Goodman Gallery, 2017. First edition. As-new. 12 x 10 inches. 536 pages. Profusely illustrated in color. Original green boards; original slipcase. "The fourth volume of the John Baldessari Catalogue Raisonné comprises approximately 370 works that represent the activity of this iconic conceptual artist between 1994 and 2004. Here, John Baldessari (b. 1931) continues to interrogate the possibilities of photographic appropriation, further developing his unique strategies for the production of meaning and narrative within the picture frame. Included in this crucial volume is the landmark Goya series, which shows the artist revisiting his characteristic photo-text pieces established early in his career. In the serial trio Overlap, Intersection, and Junction, produced between 2000 and 2002, Baldessari riffs on the notion of pictorial space, with each series building on the preceding one. Along with a full chronology, an essay contributed by the eminent critic Robert Storr closely examines a selection of these works, articulating their place within the evolution of the artist's career and their much broader historical climate" (the publisher).

Description
Norman: Arthur H. Clark Company, 2008. First Edition. 496pp. Octavo [24.5 cm] Blue cloth with the title silver stamped on the front board and backstrip. Near fine. Volume 12 in the ambitious and well received 'Kingdom in the West' series. This compelling documentary record presents the primary evidence that tells the story from its contradictory perspectives. The sources let readers evaluate and track the evolution of such myths as the Piautes' guilt, the emigrants' provocation of their murderers, Brigham Young's ignorance of what happened, and John D. Lee's sole culpability. Clearly revealed is the part Utah authorities took in blocking the investigation until it became expedient to sacrifice Lee. Together these narratives show how the massacre's story has been continually distorted and then revealed over 150 years - and how the obfuscation and cover-up continue. Clark & Brunet 12.
