Description
16/02/1823. Philip Bush was a merchant in Winchester, Virginia, who also owned the noted Golden Buck Tavern in the town. He had known George Washington since the latter’s days as colonel of the Virginia Regiment in the 1750s, and George Washington had an account with him. Bush was on friendly terms with James Madison and John Marshall as well. Bush was a patriot who provided supplies for the Virginia Regiment in the Revolutionary War.Bush was willing to advance supplies during the Revolution, and receive an IOU, in the hope of getting paid later. But when he died in 1812, he still had not been paid by the War Department for a major outlay he’d made during the war. In 1820 his heirs petitioned the House Committee on Pensions and Military Claims, which then filed a report. It stated in part: “The petitioner states that his testator Philip Bush in consideration of provisions furnished for the use of the army of the United States on the 31st of March 1780 received a certificate from J. Brown Jr., for [on behalf of] A. Steel, deputy quartermaster general, for the sum of $32,842…That in the year 1785 the said certificate was lost and that neither the petitioner's testator nor any one for him has received one cent therefor…” The petitioner had sought “that justice done towards him to which he is entitled.” The House Committee denied the claim, but the Bush heirs apparently appealed the decision or decided to take the matter to court.Seeking to see justice done for an old friend, Chief Justice Marshall became involved and provided a letter attesting to Bush’s character and honestly. This is that letter. Autograph letter signed, as Chief Justice, February 16, 1823. “I was very well acquainted with the late Mr. Philip Bush of Virginia. Through his life he maintained the reputation of a strictly honest man. I know no person whose character for integrity stood more entirely free from suspicion.”The ultimate resolution of this case is lost to history. But what has survived shows that John Marshall was a man who sought justice, for merchants and tavern keepers as well as the wealthy and well-connected.

Description
Franklin Center, Pennsylvania: The Franklin Library, 1979. Near fine or better.. Signed limited Franklin Library edition of Baldwin's first novel, his semi-autobiographical "extended rite of exorcism" (Harris). In writing this book, Baldwin did more than draw from his own experiences growing up with a religiously domineering father in 1930s Harlem: he wrote and re-wrote the work for ten years as a way to come to terms with the painful relationship with his father. In the novel as in Baldwin's own life, the hero's path to acceptance lies not in obedience and acceptance but in the intellectual liberation achieved through books and education. One of TIME's "Best English-Language Novels from 1923 to 2005," this limited edition includes a special foreword by Baldwin. An American classic. 8'' x 5''. Original full gilt-stamped leather, raised bands. All edges gilt, red silk ribbon marker, watered silk endpapers. Illustrated by Silverman with full-page plates. [18], 232 pages. Signed by Baldwin to early blank, as issued. Touch of shelfwear at bottom corners. Trace sunning to spine. Else bright, clean, and sharp.

Very Good in Very Good dj
Description
Garden City NY: Doubleday, Doran & Company, Inc.. Very Good in Very Good dj. 1935. First Edition. Hardcover. (price-clipped) [solid copy, very light wear to cloth at most corners, small label on ffep from "Central Building Newsstand" with indication of rental rate (the ONLY evidence that this is an ex-rental library book); jacket is very lightly soiled, chipped at top and bottom spine extremities, but still quite attractive]. One of those rooming-house novels so popular in the Depression era; there was just something so appealing about that "Grand Hotel"-style narrative structure, which among other things allowed a writer to string up a bunch of anecdotal material and not have to worry too much about, you know, an actual plot. This one is set in Pittsburgh, "in those flush days after the War when everyone had money and when social and moral standards were changing at a dizzy rate," and centers around the home of a woman named Lucille Bonnard, who took in "drifting girls" as boarders. (Interestingly, there was another rooming-house novel published the same year -- they were everywhere, I tell ya -- called "At Madame Bonnard's," by Joseph Vogel.) This was the author's first, and apparently only, book. Hanna 3591. .

Very Good+
Description
New York: George H. Doran Company. Very Good+. (c.1920). First American Edition Later Printing. Hardcover. (no dust jacket) [light wear only at the extremities, but the front endpaper appears to have been removed, with consequent weakening of the front hinge; still quite a decent copy]. Although the title, to modern eyes, carries a science-fictional suggestion, in fact this novel is set in the London theatrical world, and deals with the tensions in the marriage between an actress and her playwright husband. In the words of a contemporary reviewer, it tackles these questions: "Is a professional career for women compatible with domestic happiness? Can husbands and wives be successfully wedded to their own professions as well as to each other?" Another critic lauded the book for avoiding the usual tropes of backstage stories, by "represent[ing] actors and actresses as hard working folk, and managers as ordinary human beings," and offered an interpretation of the book's title as symbolizing "all that part of the actor's world which is not bounded by the three sides of his stage." (In a little less poetic and more commercial vein, an advertisement for the book stated: "The fourth dimension is happiness, and the theme is a woman's search for it.") The author was English-born, but had lived in California (where he'd been involved in land speculation) during the last two decades of the 19th century, and drew on that experience for a number of his novels (he wrote over fifty, as well as numerous plays, short stories, and essays). This copy does not bear the Doran colophon on the copyright page, thus is probably a later printing of the American edition; the book was also published the same year in London (J. Murray) and Toronto (McClelland and Stewart). .
