Riverrun Books & Manuscripts (United States)
Description
From the Bart Auerbach Collection. Together 5 1/2 pages, 4to, approximately 2050 words (four of the letters single-spaced, one double-spaced). In very good condition. The letters constitute a virtual running account of Schulberg's occupation with 'What Makes Sammy Run': "I wrote a story last week which I am sure is the best I ever did. It is about a Hollywood writer, and called 'What Makes Manny Run'... I was bowled over when I heard I had sold my story to Liberty [magazine] for five weeks' salary ... the Manny story (which incidentally is now Sammy, because Liberty was afrain Manny Cohen of Paramount would think it was him)..." In the course of the correspondence, the 23-year-old Schulberg also praises Saroyan's 'Little Children', describes a house he stayed in ("... it looked so big and naked, and somehow forgive me, I thought of a dame lying naked in a house, all alone, and waiting and waiting..."), and comments on Groucho Marx, Ring Lardner, and David Selznick. Description
San Francisco: The Arion Press, 2018. Hardcover. New. R. B. Kitaj. Large octavo, 9-3/4 inches x 7 inches, 290 pages, printed by letterpress, full cloth binding with slipcase. Thirteen illustrations in color, three in black and white including the front cover portrait. The edition is limited to 275 numbered copies for sale. "Exit Ghost", the 2007 novel by the great American writer Philip Roth, is presented here alongside art work by his close friend the American painter R. B. Kitaj. We had long hoped to include Philip Roth in the Arion Press publishing program, but were waiting for inspiration on how to present his work, mainly on the question of an artist to illustrate one of his novels. In this case we ran out of patience and made Roth the offer without an artist in mind. As luck would have it, Roth's choice drove the choice of the artist and the scheme for the illustrations. The edition is not signed as planned. Roth died on May 22, 2018, at the age of 85. The novel's title comes from a stage direction in the first act of Shakespeare's Hamlet when Hamlet's father's ghost refuses to answer questions and then disappears. Roth's protagonist Nathan Zuckerman, elderly and debilitated by prostate surgery, has left the stage. So has Philip Roth. Critic Charles McGrath wrote in the New York Times obituary, "he was a pre-eminent figure in twentieth-century literature, a prolific, protean, and often blackly comic novelist". He won every prize except the Nobel. When the singer Bob Dylan was awarded that prize, Roth did not express outrage but instead the hope that the next winners would be the folk-singers Peter Paul and Mary. In an interview with McGrath in the New York Times Magazine of January 16, 2018, entitled, "No longer writing, Philip Roth still has plenty to say", Roth was asked what he had been reading recently. "Just in the past week, I read books by two friends, Edna O'Brien's wise little biography of James Joyce and an engagingly eccentric autobiography, 'Confessions of an Old Jewish Painter', by one of my dearest dead friends, the great American artist R. B. Kitaj." ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Rozier studied in the Jesuit college at Villefranche-sur-Saône and entered the Saint-Irénée seminary in Lyon. He was admitted to the Académie de Lyon. In 1779 he set himself up near Béziers (domaine de Beauséjour) where he edited his Cours complet d'agriculture (twelve volumes, of which nine were by Rozier himself, 1781–1800). In 1786 Rozier became director of Lyon's agriculture school. He returned to Lyon a few years later and assisted in the early stages of the French Revolution, asking the first two assemblies to create a national agriculture school. He became curé constitutionnel of Sainte-Polycarpe parish in Lyon during the Revolution and was killed in his bed by a bomb during the siege of Lyon. The last two volumes of the Cours Complet were published posthumously in 1796 and 1798. Our edition is the second, and contains a list of 650 subscribers at the end of the text.
