Description
1860. Half Morocco. Marbled paper pastedown on boards. Good. Mostly manuscript trade catalogue for swords. With 61 pen and ink illustrations of the swords on offer. Oblong, 12 by 22.5 cm. 60 leaves, paginated in ink, with content on all rectos, and also the last 12 versos, plus 8 page printed price list pasted down to REP. The 61 pen-and-ink illustrations of swords are done one per page, accompanied with neat cursive handwritten captions, Eleven photographs, each depicting several swords, these forming contents of all but one versos which aren't blank. Many of the swords were ceremonial or decorative, but even these still had a place in military uniforms of the era. While the album is undated, it is from the Civil War era. Rebacked with black calf. Corner black leather very heavily worn, dry, chipped and virtually perished. Marbled pastedown on boards abraded or rubbed, but reasonably appealing. Title label centerpiece of leather has some dryness and cracking but remains a nice complement. First blank leaf has edge chipping. FEP stained and soiled. All leaves following intact, with age toning more pronounced along edges, and occasional stains which aren't disconcerting, in our view. Later leaves have some rippling, a result of mounted photos on versos and their paste. Last leaf with a few minor chips. Overall, we would regard the interior as very good, the binding, even with the repair, somewhat less.

He was born in 1854 in Dublin, Ireland, and as a child, he was fascinated by the printed word. From an early age, Wilde was drawn to books as a source of comfort and inspiration. He read widely, absorbing the works of writers such as Shakespeare and Byron. In 1891, Wilde published his first novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray, which became a bestseller.
