Description
Lodi, Wisconsin: J. Steele, 1901. FIRST EDITION. 232 x 155 mm. (9 1/8 x 6"). 81 pp. Original green (faded to brown) printed paper wrappers. Housed in a fine modern caramel-colored morocco clamshell box with gilt lettering on spine. Inside front wrapper with ink signature of M. R. Skinner; occasional pencil underlining in the text. Howes S-924; Graff 3964; Streeter 3027; Wagner-Camp 244 (note). Top inch of spine chipped away, a little fraying to edges, first three leaves with overall browning, minor corner creases, but QUITE AN EXCELLENT COPY of a very fragile item, clean and fresh internally, with the insubstantial binding entirely intact (against all odds). Based on the author's diaries written between September 1850 and July 1853, this work, as the introduction tells us, lays out events "just as they happened," being "ludicrous, solemn, serious, tragic, inexpressibly sad, but always interesting." Kurutz calls the book a "detailed and important account of mining life" and notes that Steele "provided important information on mining techniques and laws while laboring in the Coloma District and on the Yuba and Feather rivers." This account includes some fascinating stories about the many hardships and dangers experienced by the author and his associates, including nearly constant fatigue and hunger, dreadful weather conditions, and dicey encounters with desperados, dishonest miners, and disgruntled frontier men of commerce. John Steele (1832-1905) was only 18 years old when he left his home in Wisconsin for the gold fields of California. After three and a half years of adventuring, he returned to the Midwest, where he pursued a career in teaching. Steele also volunteered for the Union army during the Civil War, and spent the last 30 years of his life as a minister in the Methodist Episcopal Church. The present work was privately printed by the author in a small number of copies and is, as expected, quite rare on the market now. Besides the present one, RBH lists just two other copies sold since 1981 (and as of this writing, no other dealer seems to be offering one). Furthermore, our copy is a remarkably well-preserved survival, with its delicate wrappers and text in condition as attractive as one could hope to find..

Description
12, 250 pp. 8vo, attractive antique half-calf & speckled boards, spine gilt, red morocco lettering piece on spine, a.e.g. Anvers: J. Grangé, [1773?]. An earlier owner attributes the ownership of this catalogue to Pierre François Gisbert de Schorel, seigneur de Wilryck (1716-73 or 1778) and mayor of Anvers, whose collection of paintings was sold the following year in Anvers by Grangé. Van Schorel was actively involved in the artistic life of Antwerp and in the early 1740s played an important role in the reorganization and financial support of the city’s Academie voor Schoone Kunsten. He formed one of the largest gatherings of Rubens’s oil sketches in the southern Netherlands in the eighteenth century. His splendid art collection featured twenty-eight paintings by Rubens. The book section consists of 1829 lots; it was a library rich in art history and auction catalogues of books, prints, drawings, and paintings. The owner also had a fine collection of novels and history. The remainder of the catalogue describes illustrated books (12 lots), portefeuilles of loose prints (207 lots), and about ten more lots of portraits and other subjects. Fine copy. ❧ Not in Blogie. Boston: Printed for D. Henchman, 1727. [4], 28 pp, with the half title [which is loose]. Light rubberstamp at blank portion of half title and title page [intrusion onto border]. Disbound, Good+. Wigglesworth opposed unbridled evangelism, the Great Awakening, and Reverend Whitefield. "If Ministers are God's Messengers [as we have heard] then let them wait for those Divine Orders that make them so. It becomes them not presumptuously to invade the sacred Office, and run before the Lord sends them. They must obey the Call of Providence, and stay until they be duly qualified, and regularly inducted and authorized." Evans 2976. ESTC W32191.

Description
New York City: [the company, 1857. Original candy packaging, a bag (28 x 16.5 cm.), printed in blue with text and engraved illustration on verso and recto. A confectionery bag from the famous Ridley & Co., suppliers of candy to New York City, and renowned for their Sugar Plums. Founded in 1806 and backed by the Stewart sugar interests, the original Ridley & Co. was located at Chambers and Greenwich Streets. In 1850 the headquarters, incorporating both steam-powered manufacturing facility and retail shop, moved to the corner of Chambers & Hudson. It's this three-story, white brick corner building that is depicted in the blue steel engraving on the bag. The illustration shows the storefront with large painted signs for "Candy Sugar Plums". There are horse drawn trolleys, on the 6th and 8th Avenue lines, and customers flocking to the entrance of the attractive storefront. The verso contains an additional engraving, also printed in blue, depicting "Ridley & Co's Branch Store, 206 Fifth Avenue, Corner 26th Street, New York". A new building (without Ridley's) appeared at this location in 1856-57, thus providing the upper date limit of this item. The bag is "crinkled" and has some edgewear to the top, and a few small stains. Still, over all near very good, and an early and remarkable survival.
