Description
16 vols. bound in 6. 8vo, cont. patterned cloth (Vols. 1-13), modern cloth (Vols. 14-15), & orig. wrappers (Ghent sale). London: Sotheby, Evans, or Wheatley (Vols. 1-13), Paris: Silvestre (Vols. 14 & 15), & Ghent: Ch. Citerne, 1834-37. The auction catalogues of the library of Richard Heber are very rare; this set is complete and includes the very rare Ghent catalogue of 26 Oct. 1835. “The Dibdinian age may be aptly said to terminate with the dispersal of the gigantic library accumulated by Richard Heber (1773-1833), a bibliomaniac if ever there was one…From 1800 to 1830, he purchased at every London sale, either in his own name or through agents like Triphook and Thorpe. He thought of nothing of securing whole libraries at a time. When he died, his books filled two houses in London, one at Hodnet, one at Oxford, one at Ghent and one at Paris, not to speak of smaller stores at Brussels, Antwerp and other Continental cities. The total number of volumes in his library must have been between two and three hundred thousand, and it is doubtful whether any private individual has ever owned so large a library… “The dispersal of the Heber library took no less than sixteen sales, thirteen in London by Evans, Sotheby and Wheatley, two in Paris and one in Ghent…The Heber catalogues, although badly compiled and arranged in the most inconvenient manner, are daily consulted by every bibliographer… “Heber’s library, although it contained books of every description and in every language, was especially strong in literature and in history. His series of Continental books, early Italian and Spanish works, later Latin poetry, humanistic treatises of the Renaissance, were unrivalled. He owned a very large number of early French books… “The real strength of Heber’s library was, however, in the field of early English literature, especially poetry and the drama. For thirty years he collected systematically and purchased nearly every item which came on the market.”–De Ricci, pp. 102-04. Fine set from the library of E.P. Goldschmidt. ❧ Gustave Brunet, Dictionnaire de Bibliologie Catholique, cols. 469-70 & 566-68.

KANBAN: PHARMACEUTICAL STORE SIGNBOARD
Seller
Jonathan A. Hill, Bookseller, Inc. (United States)
Description
Wooden board with thick frame (1360 x 650 x 70 mm.), orig. metalwork pieces on sides & corners, with orig. metal fittings on top to facilitate hanging perpendicularly outside the shop. Both sides carved with characters of the same text, one side artfully carved in sosho tai (a calligraphic cursive script), the other side finely carved in gyosho tai (a semi-cursive script), with furigana reading marks. Characters painted with black pigment & highlighted in gold lacquer. [Japan]: date of manufacture of the board is engraved on one of the cornerpieces (in trans.): “February 1804” by “kazarishi Kinjiro Kamiya” (“ornamental metalwork artisan Kinjiro Kamiya”) at the request of “Magobei Tsuneyuki Odagiri.” “Kanban, a distinctive fusion of art and commerce, refers to the traditional signs Japanese merchants and craftsmen displayed street-side to advertise their presence, denote the products or services found inside, and give individual identity and expression to the shop itself. Created from wood, bamboo, iron, paper, fabric, lacquer, or even stone, kanban form a rich visual vocabulary of traditional advertising… “The Japanese seem to have excelled at this early take on Madison Avenue, creating a multi-faceted inventory of symbol and meaning designed to engage the viewer and entice the customer. From a hand-carved sign made by the shopkeeper himself, hanging over the doorway to his modest shop in the smallest of back-country hamlets, to a sumptuous and professionally rendered virtuoso of a sign mounted atop a tall post in the booming capital city of Edo, kanban were an integral part of Japanese trade culture… “Kanban were also, in many instances, collaborative efforts between merchants and the craftsmen employed to create the signs…[The merchant] would have had to call on the services of a kanban-shi (kanban carver) or a kanban-gaki or mono-gaki, specialists in calligraphy for kanban. Or perhaps he would have engaged an on-gaku who specialized in carving frames and name signs. Together they would have arrived at the most effective way to communicate the desired message. The type of kanban and the degree of ornamentation would have depended on both the technical skills of the kanban-shi and the depth of the pockets of the merchant employing him.”–Alan Scott Pate, Kanban. Traditional Shop Signs of Japan (Mingei Museum & Princeton University Press: 2017), pp. 13 & 19-20. This is an unusually early, large, and monumental kanban, secured by a large and thick wooden frame and, unusually, decorated with metalwork around and on the frame. Much thought has gone into the design. On one side, the characters are carved in sosho tai (a calligraphic cursive script), which not all of the general public could read. Therefore, the other side of the board is carved in gyosho tai (a semi-cursive script), with furigana reading marks, to facilitate reading by all potential customers. The central text on both sides, in largest characters, visually screams “Tan no myoyaku” (“Miracle Medicine for Mucus Relief ”) as an attention-getter. In smaller characters, in the bottom left, we have “Chogosho Odagiri” (“Odagiri Pharmaceutical Company”), with what we believe is the trade name seal of Odagiri. In the upper right, again in smaller characters, we have “Kaden Kintokutan” (“Family Recipe passed down Golden Virtue Pills”). The medicine produced by the Odagiri Pharmaceutical Company, in pill form, was to reduce sputum in the throat and ease swallowing. Most kanban were made by anonymous artisans, and it is very unusual to have the metalwork signed, and dated as we have with this kanban. In fine condition.

Alberta and Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, 1904. Unbound. Near Fine. An archive consisting of blueprints, instruction manuals, photographs, other ephemera from the organization and construction of the Canadian North Pacific railway in 1904. This album takes place in Prince Rupert, British Columbia. Contains 33 black and white or sepia toned photographs measuring between 5.5" x 4" and 8" x 6". All manuals and paper items has some edgewear and creasing else near fine with fine photographs. An archive of blueprints, documents, instruction manuals, and photographs of the construction of the Canadian North Pacific railway from 1904. The building process began in 1910 and was completed in 1915. It is a historic Canadian railway with a main line running between the Alberta-British Columbia border and Vancouver, British Columbia. All the documents are from 1904 when construction was in the preliminary phase. These documents go over the plans and preparations needed to complete the railway. The archive consists of the blueprints for the railway as well as some construction photographs. The photographs begin later after construction started and feature shots of the railway set up along several rounds and mountainous areas sometimes with track boxes set up. There are some pictures of dams being built, one of which shows the dam leaking and the railway being halted. Another set of photos show the ice being blow up with explosives to lay the tracks on the ground. The manuals are for the survey of hydrographic information for the water power branches in the area. There are some water meter prototypes included with the blue prints. In some photographs men can be seen standing out in the snow, stopping at Nabob Coffee and other Vancouver stores. Nabob started in Vancouver in 1896 and still runs today. There are also some pictures of the native Canadians living in Vancouver and other parts of Canada while the railway was being planned. An interesting collection of ephemera and photographs relating to the construction of the Canadian North Pacific railway.

Description
Millerton, New York: NP, 1972. True First Edition. Hardcover. vg. Quarto. 15pp., 160 plates. Photo-illustrated paper-covered boards with black lettering on spine in photographic dust jacket. Diane Arbus (1923-1971) was noted for her portraits of people on the fringes of society such as prostitutes, transvestites, dwarfs, giants, as well as ordinary working class citizens in unconventional poses and settings. This work was published in conjunction with the 1972 retrospective staged by MoMA curator John Szarkowski which attracted more than 7 million viewers. Arbus also became the first American photographer to be exhibited at the Venice Biennale. Her 1967 photograph Identical Twins which illustrates the front cover as well as the dj of this work, is tenth on the list of most expensive photographs. "For me the subject of the picture is always more important than the picture. And more complicated. I do have a feeling for the print but I don't have a holy feeling for it. I really think what it is, is what it's about. I mean it has to be of something. And what it's of is always more remarkable than what it is." (Diane Arbus). Illustrated with 80 annotated full-page b/w reproductions of photographs by Arbus, as well as one photo of herself. This copy is the first printing with the plate titled "Two Girls in Identical Raincoats, Central Park, N.Y.C, 1969" which was supressed in subsequent printings. Edited and designed by Arbus' daughter, Doon Arbus and Marvin Israel. 15 pages of text, edited from tape recordings of a series of classes Arbus gave in 1971 as well as from some interviews and some of her writings. Head and tail of spine and parts of edges slightly bumped. One-inch bump on top edge of back board. Some creasing and scuffing on dj, few tiny closed tears on dj edge. Minor age yellowing to outer edges of pages not affecting images. Tight copy in overall very good condition.

Description
Oxford: Shire Publications / Bloomsbury Publishing Plc, 2018. Softcover. VG.. Octavo. Softcover. Illustrated wraps. 63 pages : color illustrations ; 21 cm. The rood screen was the visual focus of the medieval parish church, dividing the nave from the chancel. Most were built of wood and were adorned with intricate carved decoration painted in bright colors, often with images of saints. Defaced and often dismantled during the Reformation in the mid-sixteenth century, most surviving screens have been restored to their former glory since the nineteenth century and are now among the most prized treasures of our parish churches. This fully illustrated book explains the symbolic and practical significance of rood screens and describes the ways in which they were constructed and decorated. There is also an extensive list of churches in England and Wales where screens can be found.
