The purpose of such a fantastic method of arrangement was presumably to attract more gifts; but the printed catalogue goes no further than the letter C...This catalogue became celebrated as a picture of the learned world in Aprosio's day, and it was translated into Latin by J.C. "In the long process of assimilation into Latin of the Greek and Arabic corpus of natural philosophy, there was a constant tendency for earlier material to be incorporated into later and thus lose its identity. But the earlier works often persisted, even though in disguised form, and constituted a permanent element of our intellectual heritage. Sometimes modern scholarship has been able to rescue an earlier author from anonymity and to delineate his significance in the growth of Western thought. One such author is Alfred of Sareshel, also known as Alfredus Anglicus. The rediscovery of Alfred has been the work of many scholars, whose writings have shown Alfred to have been a translator from the Arabic, a commentator on Aristotle's natural philosophy, and the author of a treatise DE MOTU CORDIS which was incorporated into the curricula of many universities in the thirteenth century. Alfred also emerges as one of the most important and oldest witnesses for the reception of the natural philosophy of Aristotle and for the oldest Greek-La tin translations. He has been called by D. A. Callus "a forerunner of the great commentators," and CI. Baeumker asserts that his knowledge of Aristotle is unmatched by any schoolman of the early thirteenth century. The purpose of this paper is to show Alfred's role in the reacquisition of Aristotle's natural philosophy by examining his commentary on Aristotle's METHEORA to show specifically the sources for Alfred's commentary, Latin, Greek, Arabic; and to indicate how he employed them." / Otte.
