Description
1743. Woodcut royal arms on title. 1 p.l., 34 pp. Small folio, cont. French red morocco, panelled in gilt in the style of the “cabinet du Roi,” gilt arms & ciphers [Olivier 2495 fer 2] on covers, with ciphers on spine, a.e.g. Paris: de l’Imprimerie Royale, 1743. First edition and very uncommon. This catalogue, the splendid Han Fürstenberg — Otto Schäfer — Jacques Bemberg copy, lists the plates made of the collections of the king, including paintings, medals, royal chateaux, fountains, grottoes, statues, busts, tapestries, and jewels, along with records of festivals, entrances, battles, etc., etc. “Colbert, understanding that engraving was the best means to disseminate and preserve knowledge of the undertakings of Louis XlV, began to assemble a group of outstanding engravers. By 1660 they had achieved the stature of independent artists and by 1670 had become a special group under the protection of the king, joined together at the Gobelins around Charles Le Brun and Sebastien Le Clerc. From 1660 André Félibien was charged with providing descriptions of maisons royales and Adam Van der Meulen and Israel Silvestre were sent to the newly conquered territories to make views of the principal chateaus and fortresses. Other commissions for the Cabinet du Roi included engravings by Chauveau of the king’s paintings at the Tuileries; copies of paintings and sculpture by Claude Mellan, Rousselet, and Audran in the galleries of the king; copies by Ronelet of the king’s collection of medals; and other works of art and architecture by Rousselet, Silvestre, Chauveau, and Le Clerc. At the same time the Académie des Sciences began scholarly works commissioned by Colbert…Illustrators for these works were Abraham Bosse, Sebastien Le Clerc (who often made engravings for Claude Perrault), Nicolas Bailly, and L. de Châtillon… “From 1670 Colbert determined to join these engravings in a collection. He proposed that at the end of each year a temporary volume would be composed of all types of works, with the text printed in French and Latin. At the end of ten or twelve years the collection would be subdivided by topics, so that the king would have volumes separated into all the sciences and achievements of his reign… “A complete record of the king’s possessions was never achieved, but the plan was continued by his successors. The engravings from the Cabinet du Roi were first published in a variety of sizes, and separately. They were then collected into volumes, according to Colbert’s plan, but sporadically. In 1727 a new edition was published with additional plates and a catalogue. A third edition of twenty-three volumes with further additions and an index was issued in 1743. Later sets were formed with plates from various editions. The plates survive to the present day at the Chalcographie du Louvre.”–Millard, French Books, 46. This catalogue was issued as a guide to the contents of the fifty sets of 956 plates of the 1743 edition, which were prepared as gifts (see Balayé, La Bibliothèque Nationale des origines à 1800, pp. 226-27). Fine copy.

Description
[Saint Paul. MN]: Little Brown Mushroom, 2008. All elements fine and housed in custom half-leather slipcase with linen chemise. An exceptional artifact from Soth's creative process, for the first DIY publication from his Little Brown Mushroom.. Folio. Handmade maquette used in the production of Alec Soth's elegiac The Last Days of W (2008), in which the photographer revisited images that he'd captured during the two Presidential terms of George W. Bush; "a panoramic look at a country exhausted by its catastrophic leadership." Into a spiral-bound notebook, Soth has here pasted 46 inkjet prints across 62 pages—compared to a count of 36 images across 46 pages in the final publication, which often employs variant sequencing of the images. SIGNED by Soth to first page, with pencil annotations to the concluding section "Either Dusk or Dawn." Accompanied by a copy of the publication's Special Edition, printed tabloid style to newsprint; also SIGNED by Soth to front cover, with corresponding "placemat" print signed and titled by Soth to verso and hand-numbered as 72 of 100. This copy of the Special Edition extra-illustrated with inserted inkjet printouts, reproducing the commercial use for nine corresponding images (e.g. The New York Times Magazine, Telegraph Magazine). Also accompanied by a trade copy of the publication.

Description
1962. First Edition. KUBASTA, Vojtech. The American Indian Hunt. London: Bancroft, [1962]. Folio (9 by 13 inches), staple-bound as issued, original half red cloth, original pictorial paper wrappers; pp. 8 and double-page pop-up. $950.First edition of Kubasta's striking American Indian Hunt pop-up book, featuring an eight-page story (""The Day of the Bison Hunt"") and a vibrant, double-page, folio pop-up of an Indian camp, in original pictorial wrappers depicting an Indian chief. This wonderful pop-up book includes an eight-page story and an extremely large pop-up (17-3/4 by 12-1/2 by 10-3/4 inches) about an American Indian father and son who join a neighboring tribe's bison hunt after a storm diverts them from a fishing trip. ""Kubasta's talent as a graphic artist was to combine a robust graphic style of great charm and humor with a puppet-master's flair for story-telling in three dimensions"" (John Michael Dawson). ""His distinctive bold and colorful figures, as seen in this work, became increasingly popular. After the Czech publishing industry was nationalized in 1948, Kubasta began creating advertising materials for Czech products abroad that included three-dimensional cards for items such as Pilsner beer, porcelain and sewing machines. Beginning in the 1950s, he developed elaborate paper construction crèches annually each Christmas season… His beautifully designed and intricate pop-ups were later produced from the 1960s-1980s worldwide and became the inspiration for the revival of the pop-up book industry in America"" (Stephen Van Dyke, Smithsonian Libraries). ""Kubasta's faux-naif style with a Bohemian flavor is somewhat exotic to an American eye"" (Ellen G.K. Rubin), and ""today, original editions of his illustrations and books are sought after by collectors from around the world"" (James A. Findlay). Kubasta's works were all printed in Czechoslovakia using a special pre-war press at the state-run company, Artia Prague. They were then published for various markets, including the British one, as here. Montanaro, 592. Interior generally fine, single tape repair to otherwise intact pop-up and moveables, only minor wear mostly to board extremities. A lovely copy in near-fine condition.

Description
London: Oz Publications Ink Limited, 1967. Very Good +. London: Oz Publications Ink Limited, 1967. Single newsprint sheet, folded as issued (29x45in unfolded). Black-and-white photographs throughout; pink and purple illustration at verso. Sheet toned, especially along creases; tears forming in several spots. Nevertheless Very Good or better. Oz Magazine was an underground newspaper closely associated with 1960s international counterculture. It was created by journalist Richard Neville in Sydney, Australia in 1963 and relocated to London four years later. There, Neville oversaw the magazine’s forty-eight-issue run alongside Jim Anderson and Felix Dennis. Oz printed cutting commentary on topics spanning gay rights, racism, feminism, the pill, rock music, and the Vietnam War. The magazine garnered criticism in both Australia and the UK, where it was the subject of the longest-running obscenity trial in British history. Oz railed against conformity: this issue exposes the “Alfs” in our midst, a “bizarre cult of grey, short-haired nine-to-fivers” infiltrating the population. Cheeky copy includes Winston Churchill, Robert Kennedy, and King George V among a list of Alf apologists, and true/false quiz allows readers to determine whether they are Alfs themselves. Whether you believe “London swings” (UK slang that means all things even out over time) or “God is on our side,” you’re out of luck. Oz declares that “If you attempted any of these questions then you are an alf.” Martin Sharp’s psychedelic covers became a hallmark of the magazine, one of which is showcased here.
