Description
1880. BIBLE. Bibl yr Addoliad Teuluaidd. London and New York: London Printing and Publishing Company, circa 1880. Thick folio (11-1/2 by 16 inches), period-style full dark purple pebbled morocco, tooled in gilt and blind, raised bands, brass name plate on front cover, brass clasps and catches, all edges gilt. $3500.Victorian edition of the ""Family Worship Bible"" in Welsh, with engraved vignette title page, frontispiece, and 45 folio engraved illustrations, beautifully bound with brass furniture. As with many vernacular translations, the rendering of the Bible into Welsh was important to the survival of the language. Recognizing Welsh as a liturgical language helped ensure its continued use as a means of everyday communication down to the present day, despite the pressure of English. Not in Darlow & Moule. Fine condition, splendidly bound.

Description
1723. London, 1723 to 1760. 6 titles in 1 book. London, 1723 to 1760. 6 titles in 1 book. Six Scarce Titles on the Legal Profession from the Library of the Earls of Macclesfield [Barlow, Thomas (1607-1691), et al.]. Juridical Tracts. 1723-60 [Spine Title]. 6 titles in 1 volume, various paginations. Octavo (7-1/4" x 4-1/2" to 7-1/2" x 5", trim sizes vary). Nineteenth-century three-quarter calf over pebbled cloth, gilt-edged raised bands and lettering piece to spine ("Juridical Tracts 1723-60"). Some dampspotting/intentional mottling to calf, light rubbing to extremities with negligible wear to spine ends, joints and corners, armorial bookplate of the Earls of Macclesfield and small binder's ticket of 19th century bookbinder and poet, George Hatton ("Hatton/ Binder/ Manchester") to front pastedown. Light to moderate toning, browning and light foxing in a few places. Occasional annotations to margins of Proposals, markings to a few other leaves elsewhere, additional manuscript title page with thumb-tab added to Friendly Hints, interiors otherwise clean. An interesting group. For a complete list of titles and a full description, please consult the photos associated with this listing or contact us. An abridged version follows. $3,000. * This volume contains six scarce titles on topics relevant to legal professionals, including heretics and religious freedom, bankruptcy, law reform, and the proper conduct of lawyers. It comes from the library of the Earls of Macclesfield, who clearly took an interest in the contents. Given the dates of the pamphlets and the brief annotations in Proposals, they were likely acquired and read by the 1st and/or 2nd Earls, Thomas and George Parker. The pamphlets were then assembled into our sammelband, possibly by the 4th, 5th or 6th Earls. The titles included are: - [Barlow, Thomas]. A Discourse Concerning the Laws, Ecclesiastical and Civil, Made Against Hereticks (London, 1723). ESTC T31931. - An Attorney. Proposals Humbly Offered to the Parliament for Remedying the Great Charge and Delay of Suits at Law and in Equity (London, 1730). ESTC N12389. - The Statutes at Large Concerning Bankrupts... (London, 1735). ESTC T225267. - [Fobton, John]. Friendly Hints to Young Gentlemen, Who Are or Intend to be Bound by Articles to Attorneys or Solicitors (London?, 1754). Not in the ESTC, which lists editions from 1751 and 1758. - Observations on the Duty of an Attorney and Sol.
