Description
Boston: for the Author by the Collins Press., 1894. x. x-308 pp. b/w frontispiece and illustrations in text. Williams was a Canadian-born lad who sailed on a Duxbury whaler which he deserted in southwest Australia. He seems to have hopped from ship to ship and made whaling trips which included stops at Sydney, Lord Howe Island, and Hobart, as well as Fiji and Tonga. Some actual whaling incidents are recounted, but Williams career was far more wide-ranging, including gold mining in California and Australia. VG. Forster 105. Howes W-465. Jenkins p. 160. Cowan, p. 687, who notes, "Williams came to California in 1849. Pages 174 - 308 are devoted to his experiences here." First edition.Spine sunned, gutter margin of title page discolored, otherwise a very good copy of a scarce whaling book.
