Description
Oxford: Manuscript archive, 1947 - 1951. Unique.. Not bound. Very good throughout.. 4to. An important archive of notebooks and manuscripts of Peter Opie and his pioneering research into children's games and the verbal lore, quips, and jeers of the street games of 10 year olds throughout the United Kingdom in the years immediately following WWII. The archive is made up of: three bound notebooks that contain notes, and annotated clippings from various printed sources comprising appx. 400 pp.; 20 autograph lectures and articles (fully corrected with additional notes) probably given at Oxford comprising appx. 250 pp. (each lecture on letter size blank sheets); the original 58 page autograph manuscript entitled 'The Collection of Folklore in England' ca 1950 (' ... the most difficult and concentrated month's work in my life ....'[Opie]); a fine copy of E G Withycombe's book, The Oxford Dictionary of English Christian Names, 1945, containing notes, insertions, postcards etc. (some from Withycombe). In all a rich, diverse group of the original resource material for Iona and Peter Opie's classic book published in 1959, The Lore and Language of Schoolchildren. The autograph lectures and articles present in the archive are the first fruits of the original research undertaken by the Opies in the UK. In the decades since its publication in 1959 their work has come to be viewed as offering profound insights into the world of children and the beginning of a new understanding of childhood.

Description
various: various, 1968. 4 volumes. American Express (Paris: Olympia Press, 1961)—first edition, wrappers, fine in fine dust jacket; Long Live Man (New York: New Directions, 1962)—long galley and page proofs, two sets, long sheets folded with single staple in upper right corner, pages browned with few small nicks and one long closed tear to cover sheet, else near fine; page proofs consisting of single sheets with printed rectos only, rare; Selected Poems (London: Eyre & Spottiswoode, 1962)—first edition, fine in fine dust jacket with touch of soiling; War Poems (New York: Poets Press, 1968)—first edition, illustrated wrappers, fine, one of 2,000 copies. These four books capture Corso's evolution during the 1960s as the youngest member of the core Beat poets during their most influential years. American Express, published in Paris by Maurice Girodias's Olympia Press, captures Corso at his most transgressive, blending street vernacular with visionary imagery in poems that scandalized and thrilled in equal measure. The Long Live Man proofs document the editorial process at New Directions in two complete sets, with the page proofs notably absent four poems that would appear in the final published version. From the collection of Edwin Erbe, New Directions' publicity director. Selected Poems marks Corso's first British collection, published without an American counterpart. The anthology concludes with War Poems, featuring Corso alongside Ginsberg, Creeley, Duncan, Olson, Snyder, McClure, and Baraka in a volume that channeled the Beats toward anti-Vietnam War activism.

New York: Cupples & Leon Company, 1926. Lucy RENOUF. [JUVENILE] [WOMAN AUTHOR] [WOMAN ILLUSTRATOR]. Lucy RENOUF, illustrator. First edition thus. 24mo (5 7/16" x 4 ¼"); [1-6], 7-47 [1]; gray boards, lettering in dark green on front and spine, color pictorial onlay of a baby and monkey; color 8 colored plates including fp; line drawing on title page and in text; unclipped color pictorial dust jacket, rear panel publisher's ads and price of 40 cents, light hand soiling; near fine in vg dj. OCLC records 3 copies. This is the somewhat sad story of a monkey in captivity, who does not find happiness in freedom because he is homesick for a human child with whom he had lived. OCLC records a long list of juvenile books by this author, but this title, author, and illustrator are not listed in Baumgarten, nor discovered in any other reference. Per OCLC, there appears to be a prior printing in London in 1911, but it is listed without the name of the publisher. This appears to be the first edition for Cupples & Leon, and the most recent of The All About Series listed on page 6 and on the rear dust jacket, where it appears as number 14 in the series.

In original green cloth stamped in gilt with the image of a chick. Top edge gilt. William Beebe (1877-1962), one of the premier ecologists of the first half of the twentieth century, pioneered enormous advances over 19th-century science. According to Stephen Jay Gould, “He came to the astonishing realization that a few acres of tropical forest can contain as many kinds of birds and insects as the entire continental United States." The research station he established in what is now Guyana carried on investigations of every aspect of ecology, from the composition of the soil to the life of the epiphytes found high in the canopy, to everything living in between: birds, insects, reptiles, amphibians, mammals. The introduction to this volume was written by Beebe's friend and admirer, "Colonel Theodore Roosevelt.
