Description
Boston: New York Graphic Society, Little, Brown and Company, 1979. No. 107 of 250 COPIES OF THE DELUXE EDITION, SIGNED BY ANSEL ADAMS on the colophon. Book: 314 x 382 mm. (12 1/4 x 15"); Print: 332 x 488 (13 x 19 1/4"), mounted on archival board measuring 560 x 710 mm. (22 x 28"). 28, [2] pp., [3] leaves. Publisher's quarter brown morocco over linen boards, upper cover with blind-stamped morocco label, raised bands. Housed in the original linen clamshell box with leather spine label. With 116 BLACK & WHITE PHOTOGRAPHS BY ANSEL ADAMS (110 of which are FULL-PAGE). ACCOMPANIED BY AN ORIGINAL SILVER GELATIN PRINT, PERSONALLY PRINTED AND SIGNED BY ADAMS (this no. 6 of 50, titled "Juniper, Cliffs and River, Upper Merced River Canyon, Yosemite National Park," ca. 1936), mounted on archival board with cutout mat, as issued. In mint condition. This beautifully printed work presents the breathtaking black & white images of Yosemite National Park and the Sierra Mountains made over the course of 60 years by one of the 20th century's most important photographers. For the production of this work, Ansel Adams sorted through more than 1,000 photographs of the region before selecting the final 116 seen here--many of which had never before been published. The striking photographs, whose subjects range from vast panoramas to small eddies of foam on a lake, are devoid of figures and any evidence of human interaction. They are powerful representations of wilderness and conservation, as well as a celebration of the art of photography. In the words of ANB, Adams' "images became the symbols, the veritable icons, of wild America. When people thought about the national parks or the Sierra Club or nature or the environment itself, they often envisioned them in terms of an Ansel Adams photograph. His black-and-white images were not 'realistic' documents of nature. Instead, they sought an intensification and purification of the psychological experience of natural beauty. He created a sense of the sublime magnificence of nature that infused the viewer with the emotional equivalent of wilderness, often more powerful than the actual thing." In addition to the images reproduced in this book, our deluxe edition is accompanied by an original silver gelatin print, personally printed and signed by Adams. Just 50 copies of each of five different prints were made for this edition, this being no. 6 of the photograph titled "Juniper, Cliffs and River, Upper Merced River Canyon, Yosemite National Park." Although his name is now practically synonymous with nature photography, Ansel Adams (1902-84) originally aspired to become a concert pianist before gradually turning photography into a full-time career. He made his first trip to Yosemite when he was 14, and he began taking pictures of the region with a Kodak No. 1 Box Brownie given to him by his parents. Captivated by the region, he became heavily involved in the Sierra Club, an outspoken advocate for conservation, and continued to produce photography showcasing the natural beauty of the West. Britannica calls him "the most important landscape photographer of the 20th century" and notes that "the popularity of his work has only increased since his death.".

Description
A BEAUTIFULLY CALLIGRAPHED CARTA EXECUTORIA. 1793 Spain 1793 306 x 205 mm. (12 x 8"). 37 leaves of text, single column, 18 lines, in a fine, italic hand. Original red morocco, covers with intricate gilt frame of crenellations, garlands, and floral tools, smooth spine divided into panels with decorative rolls, panels with urn centerpieces, marbled endpapers all edges gilt. In a contemporary marbled calf pull-off case. WITH CHARMING ILLUMINATED INITIALS AND HEADPIECES, TWO FULL-PAGE ILLUSTRATIONS, AND A FOLDING FAMILY TREE. With signatures and three official seals. A little light soiling to binding, a breath of rubbing to extremities, otherwise A VERY FINE COPY, VIRTUALLY PRISTINE INTERNALLY. This is a beautifully executed example of a Spanish carta executoria with all the luxurious detailing one would expect from a document meant to verify one's nobility. Such a document, obtained only by those with the considerable means to do so (and, consequently, something purchased as much as bestowed), provided evidence of aristocratic lineage with no trace of peasant, Jewish, or Moorish blood. More than simply asserting one's high standing, a carta executoria exempted the holder from civil suits and taxation. (The noble would have to perform military service in lieu of tax payment, but he could employ someone else to fulfill this obligation--which would in the end be cheaper than paying taxes.) So, well-born clients often spent very substantial sums on commissioning these manuscripts and having them confirmed by the king or other person of authority. And carta executoria were often ostentatiously decorated (as here), to suggest the wealth and taste of the grantee. The two full-page miniatures preceding the manuscript show a coat of arms (f. 1r) and obelisk (f. 2v) with the seal stamp of Charles IV, dated 1793. On the marble pedestal is the name of the "Rey de Armas," the public official who was entrusted with the registration of the armorial bearings, the formation of new ones that were granted, and the observance of the heraldic laws. The recipient was Don Rafael Mangino y Fernández de Lima, and this document follows the genealogy of four of his family lines: Mangino, Fernandez de Lima, Urcesi, and Freytas. The manuscript culminates in a splendid family tree, illustrating the subject's ancestry with bold red, yellow, and blue medallions sprouting on leafy branches, a seascape in the distance. Don Rafael Mangino y Fernández de Lima (1738-1806) was a Knight of the royal and distinguished Order of the Cross of Charles III, Commissioner of the Royal Exercises, and Administrator of the Royal Customs of Puebla. He was the father of Rafael Mangino y Mendívil (1788-1837), deputy and president of the first Constituent Congress of Mexico, and Secretary of the Treasury during the government of Anastasio Bustamante. These kinds of documents appear on the market with some regularity, but very often the quality of the vellum is such that the leaves have yellowed and wrinkled over time, and just as often, the quality of the scribal hand lacks elegance. The present example is the cleanest and brightest--and the hand is the most beautiful--we have ever owned. This is also the first carta executoria we've seen with its original calf-covered pull-off case.

Description
London: Richard Bentley, 1864. First U.K. edition. Fine. Three octavo volumes (7 7/8 x 4 15/16 inches; 200 x 125 mm.). [2, publisher's advertisements], [6], 312; [4], 303, [1, blank]; [4], 303, [1, blank] pp. Original terra cotta pebble-grain cloth with covers decoratively stamped in blind and spines ruled, decoratively stamped, and lettered in gilt. Original cream-colored endpapers. Some very faint marks on the front covers, where there must once have been library labels, the absolute minimum of rubbing to corners, some minor foxing to top edge. A truly spectacular copy. First English edition of this collection of Danish tales and verse, selected and translated by Anne Bushby (d.1875), who had known Anderson since 1847. Busby believed that Anderson's work surpassed the category of children's literature. In this translation she offered a new take on the source material by adapting the language for a Victorian British audience (Viggo Hjørnager Pedersen). Many of the stories were first published in New Monthly Magazine, but were compiled for this volume as a celebration of Danish literature. The text includes stories and poems by Hans Christian Andersen ("Morten Langè. A Christmas Story" - volume I, pp. 199-208, and "The Man from Paradise. A Comic Tale" - volume I, pp. 305-312); Carl Bernhard ("Cousin Carl," "Aunt Francisca," "Damon and Pythas," and "The Bankrupt"); Bernard Severin Ingemann ("The Doomed House," "The Secret Witness," "All Souls' Day," "The Aged Rabbi. A Jewish Tale," and "The Death Ship"); Carit Etlar ("Too Old," "The Shipwrecked Mariner's Treasure," and "Twice Sacrificed"); H.P. Holst ("Lisette's Castles in the Air"), Adam Oehlenschlager ("Death and His Victims"), and others. Not in Sadleir or Wolff. Fine.

Description
[Zuan - Stencil Design Book]. Kyoto? Shōtoku 正徳 [1711 - 1716] to Meiji Gannen 明治元年 [1868]. 24.7 x 17.7cm volume of design patterns string bound fukuro toji. Hand printed sample stencil sample book assembled by a dyeing house in Kyoto. A total of 507 monochrome designs, from single to multiple designs per page, each with a stamped number, many labeled with Japanese handwritten text. A few designs have blue accents and a few have brown, otherwise monochrome. Design changes are done with a stamped design on translucent paper laid down over the original design. Many remarkable designs, including #196, of sparrows in flight, and #215, a repeating design of small umbrellas that incorporates Japanese kana into the design. The Shijo-influenced, double page designs, (such as #192 and #193) suggest the dyeing house was based in Kyoto. The first page notes that the volume covers the period from about the Shōtoku Era [1711-1716] to the beginning of the Meiji era [late 1860s]. Dates next to the designs indicate stencils used from multiple periods include; Genbun [1730s], Hōreki 8 [1759], Kansei [1790s], Bunka 9 [1812?], Bunsei 5 [1822] and Tenpo 6 [1836], showing the range compiled. Remarkably useful primary source for the development of stencil designs. Fine condition.

Description
Kōrin Hyakuzu Kōhen 光琳百図後編 [One Hundred Designs by Kōrin, 2nd Series], 2 vols in 1. Suzuki Ki-itsu 鈴木其一 and Sakai Hō-Itsu 酒井抱一, editors. Bunsei 9 [1826]. 2 books in 1 volume 25.5 x 18cm string-bound Japanese-style, fukuro-toji with tan decorated wrappers with silver mica. 37 cho of original monochrome woodblock prints, double-page, single-page and multiple per page, with preliminary text and afterword in Japanese. Cho 1-20 comprise the first book and cho 21-37 the second book. (Cho numbers from 21-37 are preceded by 下 latter/second). There is a brushed note in Japanese on the rear inside wrapper that describes the book. The preface, dated June 2nd of Bunsei 9 [1826], is signed Tani Bunchō 谷文晁 (1763-1841) and the conclusion is signed by the eminent Rimpa artist, Sakai Hō-itsu 酒井抱一, though 1826 was the year of his death and it is generally acknowledged that this collection was edited by Hō-itsu's great disciple, Suzuki Kiitsu 鈴木其一 (1796-1858). As such, it is one of the few works by Kiitsu that ever reached publication. Kōrin Hyakuzu Kōhen 光琳百図 後編 [One Hundred Designs by Kōrin, 2nd series] is the second and last series of works based on acknowledged Kōrin paintings still extant in the 1820's, here reproduced in theTempo era, c. 1830-44 in black and white woodcuts from the original blocks. This reprint is a wonderful teaching tool showing the possibilities of a different image when compared to the original by virtue of the skill and sensibility of the printer. The Bunsei 9 [1826] version is a delicate printing with light colors that offers a sense of perspective to the designs, whereas this later Tenpo [c.1830-44] volume has richer colors and the images are impressed more heavily upon the paper, resulting in a more traditional, two-dimensional image. With some wear and soiling to wrapper and areas of foxing throughout. Red pencil writing on the inside front cover and first page of introduction and a mark in blue pencil in the margin on the back of cho 17. 2 vols in 1, complete. See Mitchell pp. 376-7. From the Geoff Burton Collection.

The intricate illustrations and English text depict a warrior known as My Lord Bag-O’-Rice, who is brave enough to rescue a dwarf and his entourage from a giant centipede. One of his rewards for vanquishing the creature in a very clever way, is a bottomless bag of rice, whence he got his name. Cover detached. Chipping at the bottom right corner of front wrapper and top corner of final two cho. Final cho is split. Overall toning. Good printing and color.

[n.p., Pau, France?] 1877 In cloth-backed leatherette boards with gilt stamped cover. 1877. Together with separate sheet, 14 in. x 11 inches, mounted on cardboard, of four drawings of a similar size to those in the album, which apparently had become loose and are here displayed separately. The album was sold by stationer L. Ribaut in Pau, overlooking the Pyrenees in Southwest France. The contents of the album may or may not been assembled in that region, though that seems likely. The drawings are dated July 23 to August 18, 1877, and they show a sure improvement in drafting while retaining a certain naiveté. They seem to have been made on the spot where the plants were observed. The drawings were executed with colored pencils. Some of the drawings display minor to moderate foxing, and there is some offsetting. A thin strip of Japanese paper between two leaves secures the textblock, though the individual leaves can be removed for display. The four drawings on the separate sheet are loosely mounted with archival corners. The whole package is in very good condition and is a charming collection of designs by a nineteenth-century artist, who was likely an amateur and likely female, though we have no clear idea of their identity.
