Description
1945. London: Faber and Faber, 1945. Small slim 8vo, 206pp. Original red cloth lettered in gilt,dust-jacket. Enclosed in a red cloth slipcase with red morocco labels. Pristine, essentially as new. § First edition of this landmark work in spiritual and fantasy literature, sometimes characterized as science-fiction (but not by Wessells). The finest imaginable copy, and demonstrably never read as the final two gatherings are unopened. Charles Walter Stansby Williams (1886-1945), a companion of Lewis and Tolkien, an Inklng and a lecturer at Oxford, was a prolific writer, remembered today for his fantasy novels which usually have strong Christian elements. "A ghost story unlike any other, All Hallows' Eve is the final novel by the remarkable Charles Williams, whose brilliant literary excursions into the spiritual and supernatural realms remain unsurpassed more than six decades after his death. Williams was arguably the most creatively daring and ambitious of Oxford's famed Inklings, the literary society that included such notables as C. S. Lewis, J. R. R. Tolkien, and Owen Barfield, and his chilling, breathtaking, and deeply felt fiction remains the gold standard for provocative and intelligent contemporary fantasy." (Open Road Media) T.S. Eliot wrote of William's novels: "[they are] 'supernatural thrillers' because they explore the sacramental intersection of the physical with the spiritual while also examining the ways in which power, even spiritual power, can corrupt as well as sanctify" (n.b., quote from Wiki). "Williams first met C.S. Lewis when, each having read one of the others' books, each sent a note to the other which crossed in the mail; the two became life-long friends, with Lewis becoming one of Williams' most ardent admirers. Many believe that Lewis had Williams in mind as an inspiration for "That Hideous Strength" (published the same year as this work, 1945), the third of the three novels comprising Lewis' "Space Trilogy". "All Hallow's Eve", the last of Williams' novels to be published during his lifetime, can be considered an allegory in that "a primary purpose of the book is to illustrate Williams's particular mystical brand of Christianity." Clute and Grant, pp. 1015-1016; Currey, p. 540; Leeming and Drowne, p. 13.

Description
New York: [Printed by the De Vinne Press], 1904. First and Limited Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Elephant folio size, one of 350 copies (unnumbered), presentation copy, inscribed in 1923 by Archer M. Huntington. Archer M[ilton] Huntington (1870-1955) was a lifelong friend of the arts and philanthropist; known for his scholarly works in the field of Hispanic Studies, he founded The Hispanic Society of America in New York City; his cousin, Henry E. Huntington, founded the renowned Huntington Library in California. This volume was presented by the author in 1923 to Elijah Clarence Hills (1867-1932), a Professor in Florida and Colorado and a prolific author of Spanish-related books. The inscription is on Mr. Huntington's calling card, with "Mr." being crossed out, as follows: "To my friend E.C. Hills / with the high regard & / admiration of (printed name, Archer Huntington) / 1923". The calling card is tipped onto the front pastedown directly beneath Mr. Hills' elegant bookplate. This work was published to preserve the illuminated decorations and initials from the 9th through 11th centuries from manuscripts in the monastery of Silos, near Castile, which over many centuries and the ravages of many wars were at risk of being forever lost. As Mr. Huntington says in the Introduction: "The rarity alone of documents dating, as these do, from the ninth to the eleventh century renders them of the greatest interest; but where, in addition, such remarkable palaeographical and archaeological details are found, and such peculiarity in the application of design to the decoration of books, they become worthy of extended study and fit subjects for reproduction". ___DESCRIPTION: Bound in tan cloth with the front board richly decorated as an illuminated manuscript in rust and green, letters outlined in black, green lettering on the spine, top edge gilt, plain endpapers, bookplate and author's inscription tipped onto front pastedown as referred to above, title page with two decorative initial capitals, volume opens with a four-page Introduction by Mr. Huntington, followed by a 3-page list of the Manuscripts used, followed by the illustrations which are printed on the recto only of each page with their number on the opposite page, printed on verso only, two tissue guards (we presume original with the rest having been lost); Elephant Folio in size (approximately 17" tall), unpaginated with approximately 100 leaves; limited edition of 350 copies, unnumbered, author's inscription as set forth above. ___CONDITION: Overall very good plus, with a strong, square text block, solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, and other than the prior owner bookplate and authorial inscription, it is entirely free of prior owner markings. There is some old dampstaining and soiling to the boards, we had a professional restorer do some minor restoration to the head and tail of the spine and the corners, which are all now sturdy (name available upon request). ___POSTAGE: Please note that this is an extremely large and heavy volume, therefore additional postage will apply. We are happy to ship at cost to both domestic and international customers, please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Description
St. Paul: February 23, 1854. 4to, 43 lines, approx. 330 words; previous folds, else fine, and with the original mailing envelope bearing an 1854 St. Paul postmark. Homes warns that St. Paul is no place to live: "I shall not give them much encouragement if they come here [and] must come on their own responsibilities. I know Jonas would not like it here and would soon get homesick and as it costs considerable to get here. I don't wish to be responsible for the uncertainty of their liking the country. I would not stay here were it not for making money. This country has many failings which are great detriments to it. Timber is very scarce and in some parts the soil is not good. A large portion of the land about this place is land that won't wear long. I think the best portion of this country is on Lake Superior. Some from this place are moving there now...
