Description
1959. Very good. Original working manuscript of "Getaway John" from the album At Large, handwritten by Dave Guard, founding member and leader of The Kingston Trio. Titled at top, with chord symbols, full musical notation in treble and bass clefs, and complete lyrics written in phonetic spelling for singing pronunciation, in dark pencil with several neat revisions and corrections, and erasures throughout; on recto of a 12" x 16" sheet of yellow 12-staff manuscript paper. Measure numbers and structural notations appear at bottom. Guard's complete arrangement of the traditional folk ballad previously recorded by the Carter Family in 1929. John Hardy was an actual historical figure executed by hanging in West Virginia in 1894 for the murder of a man following a card game, though the killing apparently stemmed from a love triangle. The ballad's final verse references Hardy's religious conversion during his imprisonment, when authorities permitted him to undergo baptism in a river on the morning of his execution. The Kingston Trio achieved immediate commercial breakthrough in 1958 with "Tom Dooley," which reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100, sold six million copies, received the inaugural Grammy Award for Best Country & Western Recording (1959), and earned induction into the Library of Congress National Recording Registry. The single's extraordinary success catalyzed the folk revival that dominated American popular music through the early 1960s, establishing commercial viability for performers including Peter, Paul and Mary, Joan Baez, and Bob Dylan. This folk boom subsequently enabled the development of folk rock when groups like The Byrds and The Animals electrified traditional arrangements during the mid-1960s, but the genre's mainstream acceptance originated with The Kingston Trio. Guard, the sole member possessing musical literacy and notation skills, functioned as the group's principal arranger and architect of their distinctive sound until his departure in 1961.

1843. GRANDVILLE, J.J. Petites Misères de la Vie humaine, par Old Nick [Paul-Émile Daurand Forgues] et Grandville. [4], viii, 392 pp. Illustrated woodcut frontispiece and 49 full-page woodcut plates and woodcuts in text throughout by Grandville. 8vo., 230 x 145 mm, bound in publisher's gilt-stamped cloth. Paris: H. Fournier, 1843. A fine copy in the rare publisher's cloth of one of Grandville's lesser known works, but one that contains intimations of his masterpiece Un Autre Monde of the following year. Presumably because the surreal illustrations which were to become his trademark are in the distinct minority that this books has not been given the credit it is due. Occasional foxing, but overall a clean copy.

Description
New York: New Directions, 1953. First Edition thus. Hardcover. Fair/Very Good+. 8vo; publisher's yellow cloth lettered in blue on the spine. In a supplied Alvin Lustig designed DJ, priced at $3.50. A reissue of the earlier New Directions publication, this 1953 edition adds two previously unpublished plays. A worn and stained copy, the pages browned, the top edge of the cloth showing insect damage the bottom portion of the front and rear boards showing the effects of damp-staining. This copy is, however, inscribed and signed by Tennessee Williams with thanks to Bryand Sheedy. Sheedy bought and ran a guest house in the Turks and Caicos and over the years befriended literary figures, Williams among them. Apparently a wide-bodied, larger than life figure, in the look and manner of a modern day Falstaff, he was known to have a large library of inscribed literary first editions (see New York Times travel piece on Sheedy from 1998). Unfortunately, the Turks and Caicos is not the best place to store a collection of books, and Sheedy's copies tended to be (judging by the ones we have), well, on the "sheedy" side. This book is no exception, although the supplied Lustig jacket allows it to look ok on the shelf. Sold as is for the interesting association.

Buffalo, NY: The Ellicott Press, 1933. First edition. Very Good. First edition. viii, 142 pp. with two re-order coupons intact. Bound in publisher's black suede covered wrappers lettered and decorated in gilt. Very Good with dulling to gilt, light soiling, chip to bottom edge of front wrapper and small closed tears to rear cover at edge. Samuel Weiser bookseller ticket at verso front wrapper with newspaper clipping pasted to front blank with offsetting. Spiderweb tissue guard torn with loss. A scarce work of essays by the ostensibly Egyptian spiritualist, performer, and founder of the Coptic Fellowship of America, located in Los Angeles. Recent research has revealed him to be an Italian stage magician named Naldino Bombacci, who came to America as an assistant to another stage magician, Rahman Bey, and copied parts of his act. It was claimed that he could enter into a state of suspended animation. Fellow mystic Swami Yogananda wrote of him in 1927: "Mr. Bey can remain underground, buried for twenty-four hours, sealed in an air-tight casket, and can hold a thousand pounds on his chest. He controls his pulse at will–its beats appeared and completely disappeared at his will. He also pierces his body with long needles without bloodshed. The marks, almost instantaneously disappeared after the needles were withdrawn. He thrusts these needles into his throat, cheeks, and tongue without pain. He can produce blood from one puncture and withhold blood from another. Most of these things he performed right in front of me. In the various cities where he visits he often gives demonstrations before gatherings of eminent physicians and surgeons. In New York City he submitted to burial for three hours. On this occasion his body was sealed in a casket and placed six feet underground. The doctors who were present admitted that they could not explain the feat other than by Hamid Bey’s declaration that by self-imposed catalepsy, he renders his body almost lifeless.".

Description
1896. With an Etching by H. Macbeth-Raeburn and a Map of Wessex. (London:) James R. Osgood, McIlvaine & Co., (1896). Original dark blue-green cloth with front cover monogram device in gilt. First Edition of Hardy's last great novel, issued as Vol. VIII of "The Wessex Novels." Titled HEARTS INSURGENT at the time of its serial appearance, the book was ahead of its time: the 1890s public was not ready for Hardy's depiction of Jude and his cousin Sue settling down together and having two children (though unmarried) -- let alone, the death by hanging of his child and their two. After TESS OF THE D'URBERVILLES (1891) and then JUDE (and due to the outcry over them), Hardy was to spend his remaining 30+ years writing only verse. In this copy, the last pages of chapters are numbered in gatherings "A" through "H" excepting "B" (such pages are never numbered in gatherings "I" onward). In most copies, as here, some but not all of the first eight gatherings have numbered pages, presumably before sheets were gradually altered to conform to the latter part of the book.; in other words, except for pages 25 and 32 (in gathering "B") being un-numbered, this copy is the earliest possible state. This is a very good-plus, perhaps near-fine copy (some faint speckling on the front cover, front endpaper with hairline crack, Hardy portrait affixed to the front paste-down). Purdy pp 86-91.

Description
New York: Tailoring Arts Publishing Co, 1930. First Edition. Wraps (very thin but embossed card). Cloth band on spine. Stapled (largely concealed by cloth band). Very Good. Folio, 38 by 26.5 cm. 24 pp. All leaves of glossy stock, other than wrap covers. Twenty of the pages are b/w plates showing drawn models wearing tailored clothing. The last five of these plates are devoted mostly or entirely to components of dress, with smaller, or no, depictions of men. Most of the illustrations show two or three men as the center of attention, with smaller vignettes of a garment, or another person, or an evocative scene. Variants include a single man -- the first plate -- or a man and a woman, the woman wearing a tailored suit that is in a similar vein to the man's, and clearly something that the same tailor making the man's suit can do for a woman. The first text page of the catalogue has an elaborate "Correct Fashion Chart", which provides guidance for what to wear in the day and evening depending on the occasion, with occasions running from informal to semi-formal to full-out formal, with quite specific laying out of the activities comprising each level. For example, under "Informal" are listed "Field sports, automobiling, country wear, vehicular driving, golfing". Inarguably the chart provides a concise guide to us in understanding the sartorial culture of the day. The following illustrations of course depict the models in immaculate attire representing each of the levels of formality. As one would expect, the drawn models epitomize the ideals of male pulchritude of the day -- the "Arrow Collar Man", so to spek. While these ideals are not entirely alien to the sensibility of today, let's say the emphases on certain characteristics making up these ideals have evolved in ways sometimes ineffable, sometimes quite obvious. Most of the drawings show men with tall, elongated bodies, other than the drawing of stout and corpulent men. This latter drawing, though, not surprisingly, shows men that are stout and corpulent only in comparison to the other models. Just as diet products advertising today would do the same, showing models who are only marginally overweight. As a catalogue that is really about the selling of fabric, the overview has the virtue of not pushing particular idiosyncratic products, or the line of a particular suit maker, but rather, capturing a composite view of sorts of what was considered good taste at the time. And obviously, the ultimate target was at the top of the market, since only the affluent could afford custom suits. Scarce -- we could find no other copies of this catalogue, although this type of catalogue we do see with some regularity But we think the year of issue should be of significance to someone interested, and so that adds to the desirability of this publication. Condition: Spine cloth band frayed, lifting a little at the tips, small spots of loss. Wrap covers with a moderate amount of soiling, some loss along spine fold, a few shallow edge closed tears. First leaf has several small, but conspicuous stains and an abrasion. Otherwise, moderate wear. Still a Very Good copy.
