Description
1955. Press and candid photograph archive of Sarah Vaughan, 1950s-1970s, documents the development of a major Black jazz vocalist across performance spaces ranging from small clubs to nationally broadcast stages. The images capture Vaughan at multiple points in her career, from early live appearances to established prominence, providing visual evidence of Black women's participation and recognition within mid twentieth century American music. Her career unfolded alongside and following figures such as Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday, whose breakthroughs expanded opportunities for Black performers in commercial and institutional venues. Five vintage black and white silver gelatin photographs, including three press photographs measuring approximately 8 x 10 inches with captions on verso and two smaller candid photographs measuring about 3 x 4 inches. The candid images show Vaughan performing in a jazz club during the 1950s, accompanied by a pianist, capturing an intimate performance setting. A 1961 studio portrait issued by her agency includes a verso news clipping announcing an appearance with Ray Charles and Larry Storch at the Palace Theatre. Later photographs from the 1970s depict Vaughan in established career contexts, including an appearance alongside Pearl Bailey and Ella Fitzgerald for a CBS television special marking Bailey's forty year career. Produced during decades of expanding mass media and gradual integration of American entertainment industries, the archive situates Vaughan's career within broader developments in jazz, broadcast performance, and Black cultural visibility. The progression from small venue performance to national television reflects changes in audience reach and professional opportunity, while preserving the continuity of live performance traditions central to jazz. Minor edge wear; captions remain legible; overall very good condition.

Description
2 pp. Folio (ca. 253 x 203 mm). Dated [London] December 10, [19]27. On stationery with "Oriana Madrigal Society Leighton House, Holland Park Road, London, W. 14." printed at head. Scott regrets that he and his choir, the Oriana Madrigal Society, cannot help his recipient, presumably with a concert of British music. He has already committed the choir to a lecture by English conductor and scholar William G. Whittakers (1876-1944) on the work of composer Gustav Holst (1874-1934). At the letter's end he expresses his steadfast devotion to British composers and their music. "... I am going way on the 19th till Jan 11th & on the 15th I have promised to illustrate a lecture by W.G. Whittaker on von Holst's work & I am afraid this will mean just as much as I can ask of the choir between our next concert & the date you mention. For I will not help you without rehearsal (I dislike offhand work so much!)... I do not want you to think I am willingly unacommodating. Indeed everything should be done to give a bias to English music, both old & new; and all of us should help in whatever way we can towards this." Below his signature Scott has written the name "H. Saxe-Wyndham." Either he has intended this letter for Henry Saxe-Wyndham, the noted music historian and biographer, or, perhaps more likely, has signed the letter on his behalf. Slightly worn and soiled; creased, with one small short tear, at folds. Charles Kennedy Scott, an English organist and choral conductor, played an important role in the performance of choral music in England, especially of early and modern English music. In 1904, he founded the Oriana Madrigal Society, which did much to raise English Elizabethan music from its position of comparative neglect. Wikipedia.
