np: np, 1935. Framed. Fine. RARE OVER-SIZED PHOTOGRAPH BY MARGARET BOURKE-WHITE, THE FIRST FOREIGN PHOTOGRAPHER TO CAPTURE THE U.S.S.R. While American photojournalist Margaret Bourke-White's first assignment in the Soviet Union was to capture the environment and effects of industrialization, what the photographer ended up paying close attention to was the people. She writes that, during that time, she had a dream in which the cars she was photographing turned on her--hoods snapping, as if to swallow her. From then on, Bourke-White vowed to move away from the industrial photography of her early years, to "undertake only those photographic assignments which I felt could be done in a creative and constructive way."  And so, Bourke-White did not only spend her time in the early 1930s (taking three consecutive trips in the summers of 1930-32) photographing Soviet industrialization: she took an interest in the people too. This photograph, which captures in detail the expression and profile of each of the circus-goers, is a testament to the photographer's newfound commitment to engaging human subjects. It was soon after that Bourke-White's fame ascended to new heights, with her start with Life magazine in 1936, and subsequently her publication of Have You Seen Their Faces, a text co-written with husband Erskine Caldwell on communities afflicted by the Great Depression. Over the next several years and into the early 40s, Bourke-White produced several Life photo-essays on the turmoil of Europe: the German invasion of Moscow (1941), Allied Air Crew bombing missions (1942), and the liberation of the concentration camps (1945). In this way, then, At the Circus is an instrumental photograph because it is a stepping stone onto which Bourke-White invested herself more in human-interest stories, on the ways in which trauma, catastrophe, and war impacted people and communities. Provenance: From the estate of Evelyne Z. Daitz, the celebrated photography dealer and owner and director of the Witkin Gallery (New York). At the Circus, U.S.S.R. Oversize warm-toned silver print with thin black border, the image measuring 14x19 1/2 inches (35.6x50 cm.). With credit and subject notation "Early Russia Circus", in pencil, in an unknown hand, on verso. A hint of silvering at edges, only visible in raking light. Spectacularly framed archivally under museum glass. Note: This is a vintage print, c.1935, with Bourke-White's characteristic black border, (at this point in her career she insisted her prints be uncropped and "printed to black"). 1886. [signed, also with an A.L.s.] New-York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1886. 14 pp undated ads. Original medium-brown cloth pictorially decorated in red, black and gilt. First Edition, first issue, of this classic tale for children. Though not mentioned on the title page, the book is profusely illustrated by Reginald Birch. The author is generally regarded as an American, but she was actually born and raised in England -- until in 1865, the family textile business ruined by the cotton shortage caused by the American Civil War, she and her family moved to a log cabin in Knoxville, Tennessee. This copy is in medium-brown cloth (others are in grey-green -- no priority). It is from the first printing, with the De Vinne Press logo on page [210] (the second printing is blank on that page, instead mentioning the printer J.J. Little on the copyright page). This is a very good-plus, perhaps near-fine copy (very minor wear at the extremities, slight cover soil, front endpaper cracked). Bookplate of Pittsburgh philanthropist Charles J. Rosenbloom (1898-1973). Blanck 2064; Grolier American 89; Peter Parley to Penrod 80; a Johnson High Spot ("The joys and woes of a poor little rich boy of the mauve decade; loathed by all the now-grown men whose mothers, influenced by the book, clothed them in plush suits and wide white collars"). Housed in a (worn) morocco-backed slipcase with inner chemise. THIS COPY IS SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR on the front flyleaf. FURTHERMORE, LOOSELY INSERTED IS AN AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED in full, regarding Little Lord Fauntleroy on the stage -- addressed to "Dear Mr Eduards" (beneath which the author inserted and underlined "so Fauntleroy"). Two pages, dated Feb. 3rd 1909 in Flushing NY (where she was overseeing, in nearby Plandome, the construction of her Italianate home with "The Secret Garden"). The letter reads "If you can make a contract for fifteen weeks with Martin & Emery with an advance of $500 I think it would be well to make it... I think they might pay more than $100 a week. What is your opinion? Fauntleroy is now playing in London & has been for some weeks I believe. Are there no prospects anywhere for the Lady of Quality?" This letter refers to two of the author's best-known novels -- and by location, three.

Wear and scuffing to boards; chipping and shallow loss to base of spine; cracked along bottom of joints; corners bumped; front board bowed towards fore-edge; binding sound; toning and minor chipping to pages; larger chip and brief loss of meaning to bottom corner of pp. 83-84; Good to Very Good.  Notably this copy bears three ownership signatures of Nicholas Van Rensselaer, who, in his obituary in 1848, is noted as a "venerable relic of the Revolution" and is described as being with Montgomery at the storming of Quebec, at Ticonderoga, Fort Miller, and conveying the intelligence of the surrender of Burgoyne to Albany. A lovely association copy of the first biography of Washington, which Weems revised and republished for several years after its initial publication circa 1800. Weems is responsible for many apocryphal stories surrounding Washington, such as the "I cannot tell a lie" quote and the cherry tree tale.  Sabin 102486.

Japan, 1880. Good to very good. Minor toning, spotting, short tears. Light dust soiling.. Ten (10) Japanese Fans from the 1880s, most likely created for the tourist trade. In the late 19th century following the forced reopening of Japanese trade with the West, Western countries became intensely interested in Japanese art and culture, a phenomenon now referred to as "Japonisme". Each of the fans features either a natural motif, with flora and birds, or figures in traditional Japanese dress. It is through such objects that much of the West was introduced to aspects of Japanese culture, such as Geisha. Each fan measures approx. 6.5" by 20", and features some original artwork in ink and water color. Five (5) are original art and five (5) are hand colored and decorated with outlined images of intricate characters. One with original work on both sides. The remainder are one sided. Two (2) are signed.

A rare group of early issues from Christensen’s Ragtime Review, a short-lived publication emerging from the Chicago-based pedagogical enterprise of Danish-American pianist and educator Axel Christensen (1883–1976). Founded in late 1914 at the height of ragtime’s popular ascendancy, the magazine functioned simultaneously as promotional organ, instructional forum, and cultural manifesto for Christensen’s method of popular piano playing, which emphasized chord-based accompaniment, improvisation, and practical musicianship over traditional conservatory training. Issues typically include instructional essays, commentary on performers and repertoire, advertisements for correspondence courses, and reflections on the evolving aesthetics of popular piano performance. Christensen’s rhetoric positioned him prominently within the ragtime movement—styled in promotional literature as the “Czar of Ragtime”—while acknowledging figures such as Scott Joplin as foundational to the genre’s development.[1] Produced during the period when ragtime intersected with emerging jazz practices, the Review offers insight to the genre in a transitional phase. Some of the specific articles include a course in vaudeville and picture piano playing, several compositions and articles on left hand technique. Early loose issues are seldom encountered outside institutional bound runs; we find none in commerce or auction records. [1] Edward A. Around 1958, Ukrainian emigres in the US came up with the idea of building a memorial to "Ukraine's Favorite Son," author Taras Shevchenko, as a way of making a statement about their community and of the situation in their homeland. The campaign gained momentum and in 1960, Congress passed a bill, which allocated land in Washington DC for the Ukrainians to build a statue. Platon Stasiuk, a prominent Ukrainian-American businessman and treasurer of the Shevchenko Memorial Committee, went to Ukraine in 1961, intent on taking back a container of soil from Shevchenko's grave to be placed under the monument in Washington. Expecting an appreciative committee, he was instead met with rejection, as his bringing the soil was viewed as a Soviet ploy. Disappointed Stasiuk published a book, describing his experience, and the Soviet media denounced the dismissal as hostility towards a friendly gesture. Stasiuk returned the soil to Ukraine and wrote a second account, the current one, in which he included numerous letters of support he had received for his initiative.
