Description
Philadelphia: J.B. Lippincott Co, 1920. First American edition. Very Good +. First American edition, limited to 625 copies. Large Quarto (11 3/8 x 8 7/8 inches; 289 x 226 mm.). 110, [1, imprint], [1, blank] pp. With an additional color silhouette drawing not found in the trade edition. Color frontispiece mounted on white paper with decorative border, three double-page silhouette drawings with color, two full-page silhouette drawings with color, eight single-page silhouette drawings in black and white and forty-one silhouette drawings in the text. Very light offsetting from illustrations onto facing pages. Publisher's quarter vellum over parchment boards, front cover pictorially decorated and lettered in gilt, spine lettered in gilt, pictorial end-papers printed in green, top edge gilt, others uncut. Spine very slightly darkened, corners a little rubbed, most noticeably at lower corner of front board. Overall a Very Good copy of this hard to find title, the offsetting far less prominent than is usually seen with this title. For Rackham, "The immediate aftermath of the war brought Some British Ballads (1919), and...Cinderella (1919) and The Sleeping Beauty (1920), retold by C.S. Evans, in which his gift for silhouette was given full play..." (Hudson, Arthur Rackham: His Life and Work, p. 108). Rackham's lovely illustrations provide a sense of escapism and romance to a world emerging from the darkness of the war. Arthur Rackham (1867 - 1939) is perhaps the most acclaimed and influential illustrator of the Golden Age of Illustration. A prolific artist even from his youth, Rackham got his start as an illustrator working for the Westminster Budget Newspaper in 1892. Over the next few years, he took on more and more commissions for children's books, hitting his career high in the first three decades of the twentieth century. Rackham turned his imaginative pen to every classic - from Shakespeare to Dickens to Poe. Riall, p. 141; Latimore and Haskell, pp. 51-52. Very Good +.

Description
London: Printed for Jacob Tonson, 1705. First edition. Hardcover. vg. Octavo. (12) 534 (10)pp. Rebound in modern half calf over marbled boards with gilt ruling and lettering on red leather label of spine; raised bands. Speckled edges. Black double frame on title page. Historiated headpiece on dedication page. Handsome first edition of Addison's famous journey through Italy with some in-text illustrations depicting various Italian coins. "After travelling south to Marseilles Addison took ship for Italy on 12 December 1700, but was driven back by a storm. In the end he reached Genoa by land, and then proceeded through Pavia to Milan and then Venice, after which he followed the accustomed route south, choosing to go via San Marino and Loreto as he journeyed briefly to Rome and then on to Naples. He climbed Vesuvius, sailed round Capri, and sailed back up the coast to Rome. Here he passed a more extended sojourn, visiting churches, annotating architecture and antiquities, and undertaking trips out to literary shrines such as Tivoli and Frascati. There were poetic echoes on almost every corner for a man as deeply imbued in the ancient corpus as Addison, and he was to coin the phrase 'classic ground' to express a pervading atmosphere of ageless accomplishment, as the familiar texts sprang unbidden into his mind" (ODNB). Minor wear along edges of binding. Light browning of half-title and light water-staining in lower left corner of last few pages.

Very Good in Good dj
Description
New York: D. Appleton-Century Company. Very Good in Good dj. 1934. First Edition. Hardcover. [solid copy, slight fraying to bottom corners, minor wear at spine ends, light dust-soiling to top edge; jacket has some shallow chipping along the top edge, a bit of paper loss at spine ends and bottom right-hand corner of front panel, general rubbing/scuffing]. INSCRIBED, SIGNED and dated (November 8, 1937) by the author on the dedication page. "Genevieve Gertrude," the red-headed schoolgirl who is the heroine of this episodic novel, was the author's signature character, having first appeared in stories published in "Good Housekeeping" magazine. (This book was in fact reprinted under the title "More About Genevieve Gertrude.") "Transplanted from 'N'Yawk' to the alien atmosphere of a small New England town, she shows you the place and its people through her eyes -- eyes often wistful, sometimes angry, but always honest." G.G. was featured in dozens of subsequent stories, and one previous eponymous novel, published in 1928 -- in fact, it looks very much like this "novel" may have originated as a group of short stories (evidenced by the copyright notice giving dates ranging from 1928-1934, with copyright credited to International Magazine Corp.), although the jacket copy pitches them as "a group of new adventures." Further per the blurb, these adventures include "planning to swap a rubber plant for a huge and coveted Easter egg in a druggist's window, attempting to keep an obese widow on her diet, smoothing it out between a discouraged young man and his offended girl, [and] attempting, with dismaying results, to do good deeds, so as to gain admittance to the Pippa Club." The book is dedicated, by the way, to the editor of "Good Housekeeping" magazine. Signed by Author .
