np: np, 1996. First edition. nb. Fine. EXTREMELY RARE LITHOGRAPH SIGNED BY ILLUSTRATOR GARTH WILLIAMS OF THE COVER ART FOR E.B. WHITE'S CLASSIC STUART LITTLE. WITH HAND-COLORING BY WILLIAMS. Pulled by hand from the original pen and ink drawing by Garth Williams. Marked "Bon à Tirer" ("ready for press") in pencil by the printer. This image was acquired directly from the lithographer; Williams added the delicate gray hand-coloring in this image as a guide for the lithographer to follow in coloring the full edition. Williams died in 1996 just after this "ready for press" lithograph was printed; therefore no copies of the final printing of approximately 300 were signed.

11.25 x 15 inches. Fine condition. A UNIQUE EXAMPLE OF ONE OF GARTH WILLIAMS'S MOST DESIRABLE IMAGES.

Description
London: William Heinemann, 1898. FIRST EDITION. Original publisher’s slate-colored cloth with gilt stamping on front cover, and with the imprint on spine uniform. An excellent copy. First English edition (first printing), with “hi” missing from “his” on page 146. It was first published in America under the title Children of the sea. This allegorical novella is derived from Conrad’s personal experience aboard a voyage from Bombay to London. Exploring the themes of isolation and solidarity, the turbulent journey of James Wait and the crew of the Narcissus serves as a microcosm of the late nineteenth century shipping industry, and calls attention to the societal effects of suffering. Conrad (1857-1924) was a master of English-language prose. Known for his ability to depict trials of the human spirit, his works are regarded as some of the best to come out of the early twentieth century modernist movement. Writing at the height of the British Empire, Conrad drew from his own experiences to create his short stories and novels that reflect aspects of a Eurocentric world and that profoundly explore the human psyche.

[16], 368 pp. 8vo., contemporary sheep, smooth spine with gilt fleurons, red morocco lettering-piece "Grammaire Russe". St. Petersburg: Academie Imperiale des Sciences, 1768. First Edition. A key publication in the modernization of Russia, and the first significant work on Russian grammar in a Western European language. Charpentier's work is based the book Rossiskaia grammatika published in 1755 and written by the "father" of modern Russian literature, Mikhail Vasil'evich Lomonsov. Lomonsov (1711-1765) was one of the greatest minds in St. Petersburg during the middle of the eighteenth-century, learned also in science and math, and one of the founders of the University of Moscow. Elemens de la langue russe was published by the renowned St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences, considered the leading publisher of secular works in Russia at the time. Before the publication of this title, western visitors had no printed means to learn Russian. Aside from some slight worming through the lower margin of the front pastedown through the title-page, a fine unsophisticated copy. Russia Engages the World, 40, 51.
