THE DEAD LETTER FILE FROM ALCATRAZ PRISON, 1951-1962
Seller
Bartlebys Books (United States)
Description
A small archive of 28 letters, 12 post cards and miscellaneous ephemera and clippings from the Dead Letter Office at Alcatraz Prison, San Francisco Bay, dated from 1951 to 1962. The correspondence is addressed to inmates, both real and imagined, and to the postmaster at Alcatraz. A few of the letters were spurious or hoaxes, in which the correspondents used the Alcatraz return address, and when deemed undeliverable, they were sent to Alcatraz. Included among the post cards are several addressed to Alcatraz Postmaster Jean Long, seeking cancelled stamps from unusual places. Overall condition is very good to fine.
