Description
London: R. Ackermann's Repository of Arts, 1808. With Eight of Abbey's Twelve Key Plates in Their First "Luminous" State A Wonderful Example with 'Pre-Publication' Watermarks Throughout Bound in Early Twentieth Century Three-Quarter Red Straight-Grain Morocco [ACKERMANN, R[udolph]. The Microcosm of London; or, London in Miniature]. London: R. Ackermann's Repository of Arts, [1808-1810]. First edition, early issue, bound from the original parts, with eight of Abbey's twelve key plates in their first state. Text watermarked J. Whatman 1806 & 1807 and also L & D 1807; plates watermarked J. Whatman 1806, 1807, 1808 & 1809. "Contents" leaf in volume one in first state. With all of the errata uncorrected, except for that reading "coustom" for "custom" on p. 218 of Volume I (see Abbey, Scenery, p. 138). Complete with the half-titles, woodcut titles and engraved dedication leaves in each volume. Three large quarto volumes (12 5/8 x 10 1/2 inches; 321 x 267 mm.). [1, pictorial woodcut title], [1, blank], [1, dedication], [1, blank], iv, introduction, 1, contents, [1, blank], [1, half-title]-231, [1, blank]; [1, pictorial woodcut title], [1, blank], [1, dedication], [1, blank], [1, contents], [1, blank], [1, half-title], [1, blank], [iii]-vi, introduction, [1]-239, [1, blank]; [1, pictorial woodcut title], [1, blank], [1, dedication], [1, blank], [1, contents], [1, publisher's note], [1, half-title], [1, blank], [iii]-iv, introduction, [1]-280, [6, index and errata] pp. With 104 hand-colored aquatint plates, including fifty-four by J. Bluck, twenty-nine by J.C. Stadler, ten by T. Sutherland, ten by J. Hill, and one by Harraden, after Rowlandson and Pugin. First state of Abbey's key plates 1, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10 & 11. Plates 3, 12 and 39 in second state as usual, plate 91 in third state. Four plates in volume II (nos. 49, 50, 51 & 52) with hardly noticeable tiny wormholes. The plates all bright and fresh, a very few plates with the slightest hint of offsetting from the facing page of text. A few text leaves with slight offsetting from the facing plate. Apart from some scattered foxing to the preliminary leaves of each volume and a few light marginal spots to the text, this is one of the cleanest examples of the Microcosm that we have seen. Handsomely bound by Bayntun of Bath ca. 1920. Three-quarter red straight-grain morocco over marbled boards, double-ruled in gilt, spine with five raised bands, elaborately decorated and lettered in gilt in compartments, matching marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Fine. "The book was issued in twenty-six monthly parts, each part containing four plates, and at 7s. a part, a price that was advanced early on to 10. 6d. for non-subscribers. A thousand sets are said to have been issued, a statement that may be correct for the original part publication, but must be considerably short of the final number, when bound sets distributed later are taken into account" "At the end of the third volume, a list of thirteen errata for the three volumes is given. If these have been corrected then the set will be found to be a late issue: if all the errata are uncorrected (this is rare), then the book has been bound from parts; the same claim of part binding can be made for sets that have errata uncorrected except for that reading 'coustom' for 'custom' on page 218 of volume 1. This is the case with the present copy -- all errata uncorrected except one." (Abbey). "The [book's] striking feature is not so much the text (though the third volume is notable as the work of W. Combe) but the coloured illustrations, in this case the combined work of Pugin and Rowlandson...The pictures in this book cover all the well-known public buildings of London-churches, banks, prisons, theatres, etc.,-capitally portrayed by Pugin...The great metropolis, with its high life and low, its light and its shade, could have had no one better fitted [than Rowlandson] to portray its inmates. The spirited figures that he adds to Pugin's backgrounds show that his talents were not limited to the ludicrous and grotesque. With the happiest faculty for expressing character, he is equally at home amid a serious discussion of naval policy at the Admiralty Board-Room, or among the excited, gambling crowd of the Royal Cockpit. At Westminster Abbey or Bridewell, the College of Physicians or Billingsgate, everywhere he has seized on the essential features and the typical frequenters of the place...The book is a living and delightful record of the old metropolis of [two] hundred years ago, the London of Lamb, Jane Austen, Dickens, and Thackeray, of places and incidents that are now mere memories" (Martin Hardie, pp. 101-102). "The 'Microcosm of London' is one of the great colour-plate books, and a carefully selected copy should form the corner stone of any collection of books on this subject. The plates by Rowlandson and Pugin present an unrivaled picture of London in early 19th century, of historic value, as many of the buildings no longer exist" (Tooley). Early impressions are particularly prized: "original impressions of these splendid plates have a luminous quality entirely absent from later printings" (Abbey). Abbey, Scenery, 212. Adams, London Illustrated, 99. Martin Hardie, pp. 100-103. Prideaux, pp. 121-124 and 348. Tooley 7.

Description
1938. MUSSOLINI, Benito. Le Giornate del Duce a Genova: 14-15-16 maggio XVI. 108 pp., illustrated throughout with photomontage and reproduced full page etchings by Ettore Mazzini. Folio, 440 x 335 mm., bound in original embossed boards. Genova: Partito nazionale fascista, 1938. A spectacular piece of fascist book design in the form of a twentieth century fête book, in this case celebrating a visit to Genoa by Mussolini. The binding depicts St. George slaying the Dragon, St. George being considered an important Saint by the Genoese. The endpapers offer a tremendous contrast, being dramatically modernist. In addition to photographs of Mussolini arriving, parading and generally taking center stage, there are interesting photographs of the various celebrations and the latest triumphs of fascist architecture. Some rubbing and staining to the fragile boards, and insignificant foxing to the margins of a few plates. A rare book with OCLC listing only The National Gallery and The University of Genoa. Grillo, Il Libro Fotografico Italiano 1931-1941. pp. 180-181.

Description
Large archive consisting of: 138 letters (189 pp.), 28 volumes of business ledgers, accounts, and memorandum books (5,500 pp.), plus approximately 1,068 pieces of paper and manuscript ephemera, including checks, letterhead business receipts, newspaper clippings, brochures, circulars, used envelopes, post cards, etc., as well as essays and verse. Letters date from 1857 to 1939, with the bulk of the correspondence and ephemera dated between the years of 1870 and 1910. The letters tend to be mostly business and financial correspondence, with many written on company letterhead. There are also letters that discuss personal or family matters.Charles L. Clark (1850-aft. 1930) Charles L. Clark was born in Nov 1850, at Old Saybrook, Middlesex County, Connecticut. In 1870, Charles is found working as a clerk in a store at Old Saybrook. By the time the 1880 Census was taken he is found located at Essex, Middlesex County, Connecticut, listed as a merchant. Clark married Marie Louise Kirtland in 1873, she was born about 1854. Together the couple had at least three children, two daughters Mary E. Clark (1873-1933), and Lulu K. Clark (1877-1932), and a son Charles Chapman Clark (1879-1956). Clark was a merchant, with a general merchandise business of dry goods, groceries, and provisions. From records in the archive he was in business as early as 1871, located at Centre Brook, Connecticut. Later he is found located at Westbrook, Connecticut by at least 1889. He remained in Westbrook at least through 1930. He was living with his wife and three children in 1920, all of his children were in their forties and still single. His son Charles Chapman was working with his father as he was listed as a salesman in the grocery trade. By 1930, Charles Chapman is not listed with the family, but one of the daughters was acting as a buyer of general merchandise for the store. Charles apparently married and moved out, but remained in Westbrook and still worked at the family general store, he died in 1956. Charles L. Clark was listed at one point (at least 1906) as a director of the Clinton National Bank, along with L.L. Hull, President, E. E. Post, Cashier, and fellow directors Charles A. Elliot, S. P. Hull, Henry C. Hull, John A. Stanton, Elias W. Wellman. Everyone except for Clark was from Clinton. In 1915, Clark had a Cadillac registered in Connecticut, and during World War One, Clark acted as the director/chairman of the Liberty Chorus for Westbrook, Connecticut. The Liberty Chorus was a community organization formed to provide music at war rallies, public gatherings, singing the national anthems, and other patriotic songs. Clark also served as a clerk for the local Westbrook Congregational Christian Church. Clark was also a hunter, as he is seen registering two deer killed in August 1915 and another two in 1917. Clark's wife, Marie Louise Kirtland, was the daughter of William Nathaniel Kirtland (1813-1891) and Elouisa Maria Spencer (1817-1909). Clark's in-laws lived at Westbrook, Connecticut, from at least 1860 through 1880 (according to census records). Marie's father William is seen as a fisherman in the 1860 and1870 Census, his son William - a mariner in 1870. After 1870, Marie's father is seen as a grocer, who kept a country store at Westbrook, but was still involved in some manner in the fishing industry. In 1871, Marie's father William and others petitioned the Connecticut House of Representatives for the repeal of the laws prohibiting "pound fishing." He also acted for a time as a justice of the peace for Westbrook. Marie Louise had two siblings, Harriet Emily Kirtland, who married Elbert Stannard, a mariner, and William Abner Kirtland. The Stannard family were also fishermen. The Stannard family shows up in the records of this collection. The archive consists of correspondence and business ledgers of both Charles L. Clark and his father-in-law William N. Kirtland. Below we provide a full description of collection, which shows it is quite large and thorough, giving a complete picture of a merchant and his business. 1974. First Edition. Signed. ROWAN, Carl T. Just Between Us Blacks. New York: Random House, 1974. Octavo, original half brown cloth, original dust jacket. $1200.First edition of one of Rowan's most controversial books, a very scarce presentation/association copy inscribed on the half title by him to the distinguished judge who early defied death threats to desegregate New Orleans schools, ""For J— Skelly Wright, who had guts when it was most needed—Carl T. Rowan.""Not long before he died in 2000, award-winning Black journalist and activist Carl Rowan observed: ''Racism is still very much a factor in America… [it] is part of the American culture."" In 1950, in his first job as a reporter, Rowan criss-crossed the South, generating articles that became the basis for his 1952 book, South of Freedom. His reportage ""made him one of the most highly visible and vocal Black men in America,"" prompting President Kennedy to appoint him deputy assistant secretary of state, as well as a delegate to the United Nations. Subsequently, when President Johnson named him director of USIA, Rowan became the ""the highest-ranked Black in American government"" (New York Times). In Just Between Us Blacks, drawn from his series of radio commentaries, Rowan calls himself ""one uneasy and frequently angry Black American."" The book's five expansive essays, together in print for the first time, confirm that view, and bluntly demonstrate his conviction that ""white America remains terribly nervous about Black America."" Rowan, who also co-authored Jackie Robinson's Wait Till Next Year (1960) and a biography of Thurgood Marshall, would often say: ""I am a crusader for racial justice, and I will be to the day I die"" (Washington Post). The recipient of this highly memorable presentation/association copy is Judge James Skelly Wright, whose early judicial order for the desegregation of New Orleans public schools provoked threats against his life and cross-burnings. ""In the end, Judge Wright had his way, bringing about not only the integration of the public schools in New Orleans but also the integration of universities, buses, parks, sporting events and voting lists, historic moves that reverberated elsewhere in the South"" (New York Times). With his appointment by President Kennedy to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, Judge Wright also played a key role in ending ""de facto segregation in the D.C. public schools,"" and in 1969 was a key part of a ""federal court panel that ruled that the statute on which the loyalty oath requirement for federal employees was based was unconstitutionally vague"" and violated the Fifth Amendment. He later was the only member of the three-judge panel ""to dissent from the injunction that the court issued to stop the publication of the Pentagon Papers. The Supreme Court vindicated Wright's view in its decision"" (First Amendment Encyclopedia). ""First Edition"" stated on copyright page. A fine copy.

Description
Chicago, Ill: Montgomery Ward & Co., 1924. Softcover. First edition; 13 ¼ x 9; pp. 724; illustrated wraps; chips with some loss of paper to edges; fore-edge of pages a bit brittle; darkening and staining to upper corner; illustrated in b & w and color; good to very good condition. A massive catalog, known as the “Wish Book,†of the self-proclaimed “most progressive and oldest†mail order house, it was published in the last year of its dry-goods, mail-order-only business model, before the first retail outlet store was opened in Plymouth, Indiana in 1926. Founded in 1872 by Aaron Ward, the business was demolished before and reestablished after the Great Chicago Fire, became known for the, then, revolutionary “satisfaction guaranteed, or your money back†policy, and was nominated by the Grolier Club as one of the 100 books to influence the life and culture of US Americans.
