Description
Cologne: Pierre Du Marteau, 1678. Two volumes, uniformly bound. Cover fore-edges turned in as with Yapp bindings. Old stamp on both title-pages. Title translated from the French: "Memoirs on the origin of wars that have been working in Europe for fifty years". De Vauciennes was a French historian and diplomat. In these two volumes, he examined the causes and dynamics of European wars over the preceding half-century. First published in 1677 by Pierre Abouin in Paris. This edition used a fictitious publisher and place. Pierre Marteau, translated to Peter Hammer, was used by printers and publishers to avoid open identification on many controversial and political subjects from the 17th century onward.. The real publisher was most likely the Elzevir Press in Amsterdam, who coined the name "Pierre Marteau". 256pp. + tables, 293pp. + tables. OCLC lists 20 libraries who hold this book in their inventtory. ABPC (Biblio) finds no auction listings for the book the past 25 years. See photos.. Second Edition. Full Contemorary Vellum. Very Minor Wear And Soiling/No Dust Jackets. 5 1/2" x 3 1/4".
